I'm reminded of the line from the song "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave"

The news saddens me. For some daft reason, I imagined Martin to be above making money, to be that rare person who sticks to his principles regardless of whether he loses out as a result. I don't blame him for wanting to profit, but it does make me think much less of him as a person.

Some of the strength - and therefore value - of MSE is in the forums. Yet none of us stand to gain financially from this deal. I guess we knew that when we signed up, when we posted, it was in the original terms. But knowing that Martin has become a millionaire on the basis of some of our work, kind sticks in my throat.

I, too, will be watching the site & the newsletters like a hawk to make sure no bias towards MS and against other comparison sites creeps in.

eta. Congrats on the baby, Martin & Lara. Did that news factor into your decision?

Sorry, but what a load of $%*&!

Martin has never been about NOT making money, he has been about not losing/wasting/overspending (whatever other term fits) money.

I'm all mixed up - I think its a shame that the independence of this site is at risk, I think its not going to be the same with MS as its owner, I think Martin is admirable for his donation to charity, I'm sad that some of the people who have helped me most and imo made this site as successful as it is (the forumites) won't benefit from this. I congratulate Martin on making money from a dream. (inspirational) and wish him best of luck in his future ventures.

Altho to the odd people saying they will be careful what they say from now on - This site has ALWAYS been a public forum. ANYONE can see what you say. Its not like MS is taking over and suddenly their going to call everyone you know and tell them you've been posting lol. The site's privacy in terms of what you post is exactly the same. People can see your posts just via a google search.....

I do however hope that our emails are not passed on without permission (altho I suspect they will) because that would be fairly annoying.

End of an era, Start of a new adventure!

Without the user forums the site would be nothing (well not quite but near enough) so it's simple, don't like the news then stop contributing and find an alternative place where your hard work isn't being used to make the owner rich(er). Enough people vote with their feet and the site will die.

Get a grip. The only forum you'll find that doesn't make anyone else any money is one you run yourself. Good luck actually getting people to join it.

And if you are lucky enough to get millions of people to join (well, I say luck, I mean hard work all day every day for years) then I presume you'd carry on doing it forever and never reap any reward from it?

    Thought not.

Well done Martin. I hope for your sake the site doesn't take a wrong turn, but you deserve the reward for all the help you've given :T

making money of those who are broke is just shocking.

If you're going to make money 'of those who are broke', doing it by helping them be better off and to stop being/not become broke at no cost to them seems a fair enough way to do it though doesn't it?

And how exactly would those forum members have helped you if the forum didn't exist?!

Yes, forum posts are a big big part of the site, but he created that and brought us all here with his hard work in making a useful and interesting website...

Bored of reading all the whiners now, instead of threatening to leave just !!!!!! off and leave the normal people to continue enjoying the site.
