come out and say that it's not good for the site and it's users can he? His new paymasters won't exactly appreciate him going: "I sold it to make a deserved profit. MS will likely run it into the ground when I'm gone though." Doubt that'd sit well with the new owners... ;)

    What's wrong with saying:

"I've had to make the difficult to decision to sell MoneySavingExpert. It has been a great success and I hope it will continue. I am sorry for any users who may not agree with this but I felt it was time to let it go."

And leaving it at that? Making it sound as though he's done it from the kindness of his heart by donating some money to charity and saying it will benefit the members is rediculous.

You don't know this deal won't benefit members. It's not ridiculous to suggest the deal can be made to work for the interests of the community.

So you are saying plastering the site with adverts is going to be a good thing?

Allowing business to advertise in the forums is a good thing?

Currently the rules of the forum stop people advertising their companies and business, which I agree with. Are you honestly saying that this will continue with MSM incharge?

That's a fair point, but no doubt the response has been worded very carefully to avoid a 'political shitstorm' with the new owners. I too would prefer him to have been more candid about the sale, but that's not always going to be possible when someone else is paying you a chunk of money.

I'm not a fan of everything Santander does or how they do it, but I accept they pay my wage so I can keep a roof over my family's head. So I say only what I need to to keep that relationship 'sweet'. Martin now has the same consideration to make.

Charities will get £10 million – which charities?
As soon as the deal completes, I plan to donate £1 million straight to Citizens Advice, which desperately needs it for debt advice as, shamefully, its public funding has been cut (as you can't talk about these deals before they're announced, I've not been able to speak to Citizens Advice yet). With the rest of the funds allocated to charity, there are so many good causes, so I want time to think about where the donations can do the most good, and not splurge them all at once. So I will put donations into a Charities Aid Foundation trust, which locks it away so it can only be used to give to official charities and be put to good use over the coming years.
About Charities Aid Foundation Trusts and
    http://www.p2pmoney.co.uk/compare/businesslend.htm
Charities Aid Foundation are known for giving high-street levels of interest, below inflation, on CAF current accounts as do Charity Bank's savings accounts.

I hope there's some way of getting real interest on this money for future recipients by investing it in P2P accounts.

About CAB & Advicenow (Advice Services Alliance)
As I understand it, CAB are a franchise of local advice services - usually with one organisation per council using the CAB brand & HQ help. Other local advice centres use Advice Centre's Alliance for the same purpose. I hope someone can be found to dole-out the money impartially, and not just to one brand. Not that I'm volunteering!

Nobody could blame Martin for trousering the £87m offered by MS, anybody on here who says they'd do differently is a liar.

The £1m donation to Citizens' Advice is, I'm afraid, a drop in the ocean and won't do much to change the rubbish advice they give out on nearly every subject.

The biggest downside I can see for us forumites is that, with a big corporate entity owning the site, any controversial postings that may be slightly detrimental to a particular company, will probably get removed as the new owners will be more likely to resond to "take it down or we sue" demands.

Anyway congrats Martin, maybe you'll have time to play me at online Scrabble now (if you think you're hard enough).

I have been providing assistance, including Lay Representation at Court hearings (current score: won 57, lost 14), to defendants in parking cases for over 5 years. I have an LLB (Hons) degree, and have a Graduate Diploma in Civil Litigation from CILEx. However, any advice given on these forums by me is NOT formal legal advice, and I accept no liability for its accuracy.

So by starting the site he has the right to take all the reward. Does only the first person to hold the baton in a relay race get a medal or do they all share in the reward?

You have to be in the team. People in the crowd don't get medals. :D

How appropriate your picture is of a cat, with your catty comments you must wish you were curled up Matrin's lap purring every time he counts his millions.

    Grow up!

May I advise you, with the greatest of respect, to observe the posted notes on etiquette and politeness?

As a NEW user you're obviously not aware of them so I won't pull you down a peg or two - yet!

Isn't giving £1m to charity a rather nice way of reducing the overall tax bill?
