Congratulations Martin - over the years you've invested a hell of a lot of time and energy in promoting consumer rights and educating people about money and debt. This site has helped me get debt free and learn how to control my money, rather than be controlled by it. The donation to CAB should mean even more people can get the help they need!

There's a lot of negativity on this post, and people acting like they've been personally wronged by this decision. But why would Moneysupermarket invest so much in the site if they wanted to change all the things that make people come here? Ultimately, the forum is what you make it, and if it loses its voice or independence, you don't have to participate. It's only a website - there are millions more out there!

Once again, congrats to Martin and the MSE team, and all the mods and board guides who make the site what it is! :T

Recent wins: gym class, baby stuff
Thanks to everyone who posts freebies and comps! :j

You need a clear definition and understanding of etiquette before you quote it in your defence. They maybe your last line would not have been typed as you considered the true meaning of the word etiquette.

I'm so sorry but I never engage in a battle of wits with someone who is so inappropriately armed. I suggest you find another victim.

Probably the biggest thing they get out of this is that it is MS that is associated with such a well-regarded a consumer-focussed site, and their competitors aren't.

Well thats not entirely true is it?

Which comparison site is MSE's top pick (at the moment) ??
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)

In my experience of using the CAB, they need the money to buy more computers to google the information you need.

I've been to the CAB 3 times and each time waited over half an hour (and taken an afternoon off work) for someone to basically google the information that I needed, something which I could have done at home. I wont be going a forth time...
Fair enough, never been to CAB, so was never sure how they operated.

Now that Mr Lewis is associated with a commercial operation will he be dropped from all those broadcasting and newspaper slots where he has always been described as independent?

to start with I thought - oh he is selling out for a tidy sum

having read Martins Q&A - i am happy for him to make some money out of 'his baby' (although it long stopped being a baby a few years back)

the fact that the site (MSE) will still be able to comment on deals given out by its new owner - gives some credence to the deal.
whether that remains after the 3 years - remains to be seen.

I can only add - congratulations to Martin and the team and in the words of 'Are you being served' - you've all done very well :D

£60million will put Martin well inside the Sunday Times' Top 500 Rich List!

Isn't giving £1m to charity a rather nice way of reducing the overall tax bill?

Also, Citizen's Advice was already pretty woefully-funded (I could never get hold of them for the lack of hours open and the competition for their services).

In a nation of over 62 million, badly in debt - how on earth is £1 million going to make a difference?

If, hypothetically, 22 million of the nation needs advice from Citizen's Advice (and one could argue that it's more than that!) then that's all of 4.5pence each. Going to make a big difference, that.

Of course the magic headline figure of "£1 Million" looks good. To superficial eyes, that is. What about 20% of your cut, Martin, that is a larger figure and both more helpful and more of a sacrifice (whilst still leaving you rightly made for life after your highly-successful endeavour, I imagine?).

    Figures don't lie.
Statistics if accurately-collected and shown, don't lie.

'Spin' is lying, just more subtly - end of argument about what lying is or isn't. Spin is lying.
Is there spin here. This says to kids that lying is OK, along with all the others saying it.

What point 'financial education' if far more basic education, i.e. ethics, is undermined? If ethics were adhered to, if people didn't think it OK to lie and spin the truth - the banks wouldn't be able to rip people off legally.

Think about that, vs. the stated aims of this site and long opposition to the banks' excesses and the banks' dishonesty...

I for one find it highly-pretentious to cut-off one of Medusa's heads whilst feeding the other and claiming to have achieved something special, don't you? This applies everywhere in life, people do things for show more than for effect, and it's pathetic.

This isn't how to define Martin, in my opinion, and there's no point being nasty to him overall, but it's just the way that this selling-out has been spun - by him - that grates on me. Tell it like it is. Always. Better for everyone in the end.
