Martin Lewis is not a "consumer champion", he is a businessman motivated by profit, and always has been. Does that mean that he has taken advantage of a lot of naive and vulnerable people on this site? Yes, I would say so. Do I blame him for it? No, not really, I am just amazed it has taken the takeover for people to realise.

Indeed, a few of us have been pointing this out for a while now, but the sycophantic sheeple just can not see past the smarm and PR.
<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->
  • I do find it slightly odd that so many people are angry that he sold the website for £35 million, £10 million going to charity.

But we were quite happy when he was earning revenues of £16 million a year.

Then he had to pay 38 staff and hire an office and pay for the website.

Say that was £6 million a year?

Where did the other £10 million a year go?

He won't earn £10 million a year interest and dividends on his shares & cash from this deal.

So in a way, it was a great act of sacrifice :money:

    I am so disappointed.

I am sure that if it was just money that you wanted and asked all 5,000,000 users to pay a £20 fee to use the site we would have paid.

We would probably have paid an annual fee.

I just saved £20 on my shopping at Dwell at lunch time. Since 2004 i have saved so much money and learned so much.

I cannot convey how disappointed i am.

I am happy that you are rich but i feel that it is the rest of us who use the site who are now so much poorer.

    Enjoy your millions.
    Nice to save.

Great for Martin et al. Don't blame him at all.

Shame for the forum - can't see it having the same ability to help the truly desperate take that first step to turn their lives around.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

    You have several choices:

1.You can choose to terminate your discussion with me. I didn't invite it and won't miss it.
    2. You can keep on whining and getting ripostes from me.
    3. You can hit the report button and see if admin agree that starting a conversation with insults is the best way to make friends on MSE.

I don't really care and your opinions don't matter to me.

Very generous of you to give me several choices.

1, I'm sure whoever you were be-littleing didn't invite your remarks.
3, I'm not on this forum to make friends and especially with the likes of you. You may be a good person in real life but coming across as the complete opposite as a forum member.

    Hi all,

As Martin said on 5Live, forumites' skepticism is one of the things we love most about the site, so reading this debate has been interesting.

Just to put across the info published earlier again, the most important thing to understand is we've a legal contract to ensure MSE content stays editorially independent, free from commercial influence, we will continue to campaign and moneysupermarket services get no special treatment, nor will our database be used by them.

Basically same as now, but with more resources and better technology.

We hope that those who are unsure about the announcement will judge us on the continued output over the next months and years. The only aim is to keep working in the same way, helping more people than ever save money.

I'm not belittling anyone. You're doing that all by yourself.

As regards your point #2. I'm happy to tell you that you have been successful in your objective not to make friends. I can see why you wouldn't want any (or them you).

So in a way, it was a great act of sacrifice :money:

Part of the payment for the site is a multi-million pound shareholding in MS which will include MSE. I very much doubt if his income from his employment as Editor-in Chief, the interest on the selling price of the site and his dividends will reduce as a result of this 'sacrifice'.

I'd like to say congratultions Martin. You have changed us as consumers and over the last few years made a lot of people more aware of their finances and where to find the savings. This site and your advice has helped me personally save hundreds of pounds a year.

All I can say is I hope Moneysupermarket made their purchase via a cashback site using a credit card with interest free credit and half a dozen money off coupons.
