I bought a fresh chicken at Lidl in Croydon last year. The next morning my whole house stank and the chicken was actually green in places! I took it back and spent 20 minutes trying to get a refund as amazingly the staff didn't seem to know what to do.

I just couldn't bring myself to buy meat from there again which is a shame as it is very cheap.

We now buy all our fresh meat from Lidl, IMO their quality is at least as good as Mr T's at a much more reasonable price. Their sirloin steak is really good.

Sounds like real bad luck tbh.

I have bought the fresh chickens in there no problem. Lidl is so popular in our area that they sell out of meat daily, so its not in the fridges long enough to go off!

Other meat I can recommend from Lidl:

    Turkey fillets - fresh
Lamb Chump chops - frozen - great for lamb stews
Frozen Lamb Mince and fresh steak mince
    Fresh Pork Medallions
    Sirloin Steak
    Legs of Lamb

We also buy the sliced ham and cold meats which are fabulous and a lot cheaper than anywhere else around here.

  • Their cooked lunchmeat actually seems to have more meat and less water than what we get at Morrisons. And their gammon steaks are actual slices of gammon, not reformed, so my OH loves them!

We buy most of our meat at Costco now, but we've never had a problem with Lidl's meat. Their joints are quite good!

Which bacon? I have had two kinds of bacon from them and liked neither...

I had their lean mince today and I have to say that there was no fat to pour off and it tasted great.
Their basic mince tastes good as well but there is usually a fair bit of fat to pour off, I tend to use this mince for pasta or chilli dishes.
Never had a problem with any meat from Lidl, always good value for money, more so today with 40% off, I stocked my freezer.
  • 2 weeks ago i bought a chicken from tesco (just their £3 job, not free range or organic) and the amount of water that came out during cooking was waful. it also didn't carve well at all.

bought a chicken at the same price from lidl at the weekend and hardly any water came out during cooking and it carved well. excellent value!

I shop at Aldi because that's local to me but I sometimes go in the Lidl near my boyfriend's house and they seem to have quite similar stuff. They both do bratwurst which is really good. It has a really high meat content and is actually cheaper by weight than the sausages. I buy than quite a bit. I can't really comment on Lidl's meat though I have found Aldi's to be very good on the whole. They do a lot of cold cured meat some of which is very good but some has quite a bit of added water but I think still tastes better than most supermarket equivalents and they do have a range of things like ham so you can choose one with less added water, though it obviously will cost a bit more. I think both stores do "finest" type versions of sausages and bacon which I think are great and I buy those rather than the cheaper stuff normally which I'm not so keen on (I buy the cheaper sausages for things like stuffing or making meatloaf). Having said that I'm not a fan of the basic range sausages and bacon in most supermarkets and Aldi specially selected and the Lidl equivalent probably aren't much more expensive.
