I phoned Capital One and gave all my details and they said that the account number I gave wasn't recognized. This means that I must have closed it down. I was told that the department that deal with accounts have already finished work and I will have to ring within the hours. Frustratingly I don't get in until around 5 which is the time they finish.

I don't want to sound too censorious, but now is the time to double-check all payment mandates from all of your accounts.

I made the payment as I remember doing it. I use to have a Capital One account linked to my Halifax (to pay off the card).

You're missing the point? Which was to make sure you don't carry redundant payees on your account - in order you don't have another 'Whoops'!
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

So you're not any further on? Looks like it'll have to be a lunch hour job

And no sign of it being bounced back into your account?

No. I phoned Capital One last Thursday evening and they found the money after a bit of a search. Said it would be in my Halifax account within 4 working days. Still nothing. Should I be concerned ?

Still no money back off Capital One. Now I am getting worried as I gave them all my bank details to send it back. I just hope they haven't accidently sent it to another person's bank account to be lost forever :-(
