Help-I have accidently transferred £1000

I have transferred £1000 from my Halifax account to what I thought was my Santander savings account. For some reason I must have accidently pressed my old Capital One credit card account (which I no longer use) that is still in my Halifax account's history. On my account it shows that it has gone through. Obviously this is a huge mistake as I should have deleted the details of the capital One account.

How do I get this money back ? I am worried sick about it :(

Is the capital one credit card still open? If it is then phone them to get the money credited back to you

Assuming you have no debt on your Capital One card, it will sit there as a credit.

They will contact you eventually (assuming they have current details), however it will be quicker if you contact them and ask them to return the payment to the account it came from.

You will need to wait 1-2 days for it to show up - they probably won't know you've made the payment until Thursday at the earliest.

  • If there is not outstanding balance on your credit card, Cap one will more than likely give you the money back in the form of a cheque. If there is a balance on the card, I doubt they will cancel it.

You can ask the bank to see if they can reverse the payment, sometimes they can reverse it but just stress the urgency in the matte.r

The payment went through on the 8th of May so it's pretty much worked. I don't have the card anymore, probably over ten years since I had used it. Can't even say if I remember closing it down or not. No outstanding debt or anything. I phoned Halifax and they said they can't do anything as it's gone over. They told me to ring them and explain. She said they would usually sent it back but if they don't, the Halifax will write to them with proof of the transaction etc. What a mess.

I take it on your cap one payment details, on your online banking, you'll have used a 16 digit card number as reference for the payment. Use that when contacting cap one.

Ok, that's a good thing. If the account is still open its just a case of phoning capital one with the reference number and getting the money back as a cheque. If the account is closed the cash Will be sitting in a suspense account. The 16digit card reference number Will make it easier to find and return

I did this exact same thing to mbna. They sent us a cheque and charged £5 for the privilege. Worth it to get the money back though!
