I would like to pose a moral dilemma ,someones grey haired Daddy comes into to your branch with his life's savings, whilst you have a very good deal ,because you post on this site you know of a better one ,would you still persuade him to take your offer thereby meeting your branch target.

This isn't a moral dilema at all...I'm not qualified to offer other financial institutes products - only HBOS, so assuming they want to do business with HBOS I would find the best deal I could for them....

Customers have to do whole of market searches alone I'm afraid, but we don't gloss it over to suggest we offer anything else but HBOS products....so no moral problem at all:D

But it would be their decision at the end of the day

no advice given either - more of an informed choice

What a loaded question. Akin to the "have you stopped beating your wife yet?" type.
    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries

Ultimately it is not about HBOS or legislation,it is about individual moral standards.
Perhaps a warning which described the fact that the products available are limited and further investigation would be advisable.
Perhaps I am being a little unfair and it is perhaps unfair to expect institutions to fore go investments, but so many times I am in a bank and I hear staff selling low interest rate savings. Most on this site are informed, but banks depend upon the uninformed and complacent.

I'm just wondering whether all Halifax staff have been put through intensive customer service training in the last couple of weeks. I've had occasion to visit my local branch twice this week (my instigation, no appointment) and been treated well!

It's a sad reflection that I've been surprised - and it could just be that the small number of people I've dealt with recently (not the same as those I've spoken with before) have been properly customer focused.

Are you suggesting that people would go into a branch of Halifax and expect to be advised about products available from ING or LloydsTSB?

Surely it is incumbent upon all savers to take a little responsibility for their own actions or do their own research? The financial advisors I have spoken to have always said to me if they are advising on their own company products or market generally.

Perhaps!!!! If someone wants full independent advise then they use an IFA - It's not an individual moral statement for me to work for an employer and offer their products and services - what do you expect bank staff to do - hold several jobs with several financial institutions and move around as top products change....Barmy!!!! Do you expect to go into Tesco to buy groceries and be told that Asda have a special offer on a particular product and that you should go there instead?

People choose whom they bank with for different reasons - I have seen many customers in the past whose products I can improve upon, but who don't want to change because they like a particular element of their existing product. It's all about customer choice.....
