I don't get any advertisements on YouTube. Am I doing something wrong?

Depends on your point of view. See anything here besides the actual content?

    Just the HOSTS file.

What should I have expected to see?

Something 'relevant' based on your approximate location; in my case a skip-able advert for the Kia Dubstep Contest. Chances are your HOSTS file is preventing your system from contacting the servers serving the ads.

Perhaps. Thank goodness. I've also not ever selected my location.

But why is the OP seeing them?

Geotargeting doesn't necessarily require your input in order to work.
