Pots an kettles was referring to your comment about men not being portrayed as sexual all the time. They certainly are in Cosmopolitan and similar magazines. Magazines made by women for women.

But the expression implies that I'm being accusatory while doing the same thing myself?

I've had a look at the cosmo 'centrefolds' online. Not one of them is in a sexual position or looking like he's about to orgasm. They may be naked and clearly there for women to look at but even this tiny example of men being pin-ups (which is not new and not what I'm talking about) doesn't demonstrate the kind of issue I'm referring to. The women on the same page though have a more 'steamy' look on their faces as they're being told how to give the best blow jobs.
Just because it says so in the Mail, doesn't make it true.

That does look daft. Presumably, it is a mistake made while altering another part of the image, but what?

It looks like a mistake while altering the length and thickness of her arm - and another in the torso area. That's my point. These are not real women. They're parodies of real women but they're set up to be the 'ideal'.

Also, the wording is very funny!

Being overweight causes far more health problems overall than being underweight.
Did you read that on a pro-ana website? Being underweight is more dangerous than being overweight.

Both are to be avoided though, of course.

It depends on extremes of course. I don't think a small amount either way is a worry. Being very underweight is more immediately dangerous than being very overweight though they both carry risks.

I understand that cosmo has started putting naked men in their magazine. There have also been other publications that print semi naked and naked pictures of men and there have been a small number of adverts making sexist remarks about what men should be like and what women should be looking for in a man.

That doesn't make the slightest difference to what I'm saying. Men are represented in a range of ways, women are predominantly represented as sexually alluring - that includes in cosmo.

How many overweight or mature women or women with acne scarring are there in hollywood for example? Compare that to the number of similar men.
Cosno have had naked men in their magazine for 40 years :T

  • I love the term "real woman" tickles me each time. Now I inadvertently thought if I had a vagina that makes me a real woman - apparently not I need to be either so skinny or so curvy. In the wise words of Tracy Cox "if you are the only naked woman in the room he will find you attractive"!

LillythePink I don't think that is what benb was saying! Just because a couple have sex at least once a day doesn't mean the only thing they have is sex! They could just both have high sex drives, be good at it together, and or be in the first couple years together. Doesn't mean if for one reason or another something happened and they weren't bale to have sex for a period their relationship would be over, in fact to the contrary those years of loads of sex might just see them through the bad spell.

There's no doubt that being sexually attractive is seen as more important in women. But I disagree that men are represented in a "range of ways". Men are expected to be strong, tough, brave, chivralous etc. How many kind, caring, sensitive men get represented in hollywood, adverts etc? Men and women both have societies expectations layed on them. It's just they are difference expectations.

Yes, I was generalising. It wasn't aimed at you personally. Sorry.

So who is to blame for this?

I wouldn't bet on it. Some of us are a little more discerning.

Yes, on an individual level it is. My point is that there are far more overweight people, that's why being overweight causes more problems.

Ask any doctor whether he/she sees more health problems caused by being underweight or overweight.
