Zagfles, if you can demonstrate that pressure from the media actually helps people lose weight I'd love to read it.
Try asking 100 random people whether they think they're underweight, overweight or "normal". The vast majority (especially women) will say overweight. And in the majority of cases, they'll be correct.0 -
Is that how she sunbathes?!
I must admit, after I posted that comment, I checked the picture again and asked myself... "Who the hell sunbathes in a dark, damp cave?"
However, the point I was trying to make is that most bikinis are not intended to be practical swimwear (certainly not the one in the pic) so does it really matter in what pose the model is photographed? Bikinis are about sun tans, flaunting what you've got, or just staying cool in hot climates. Maybe even a combination of all three to greater or lesser degrees.0 -

All well and good if they're selling sex, but they're not really meant to be doing that.
And that is my overall point. Men are not used in this way. Men are not expected to be sexual all the time. Women are displayed in this way and children are exposed to this notion constantly. Women are for sex. Men - well they can be anything.Just because it says so in the Mail, doesn't make it true.
I've got ADHD. You can ask me about it but I may not remember to answer...0 -
Re the photoshopping - it's hilarious when it goes wrong, but it does highlight what is happening as clearly this woman's arms have been elongated and slimmed with hilarious results. (Not to mention her torso.)Just because it says so in the Mail, doesn't make it true.

Good question. In my opinion the answer is yes. Look at the difference between the women in the bravissimo catalogue and the ones in the link. They are all posing and looking their best. The bravissimo girls though are relaxed, happy and vibrant looking and the other girls look like they've been photoshopped to ridiculous lengths and are posed in sexually provocative ways.

Don't be daft! My wife occasionally buys Cosmopolitan. There are blokes in their pants all over the place.
Pots and kettles.
For example. Cosmopolitan Jan 2012 Australian edition, provocative pant blokes on pages 31, 70, 77, 88, 94, 100-104, 138-140 & 144. I feel quite inadequate. Boo hoo0 -

What do you mean by pots and kettles?
I understand that cosmo has started putting naked men in their magazine. There have also been other publications that print semi naked and naked pictures of men and there have been a small number of adverts making sexist remarks about what men should be like and what women should be looking for in a man.
That doesn't make the slightest difference to what I'm saying. Men are represented in a range of ways, women are predominantly represented as sexually alluring - that includes in cosmo.
How many overweight or mature women or women with acne scarring are there in hollywood for example? Compare that to the number of similar men.Just because it says so in the Mail, doesn't make it true.

Pots an kettles was referring to your comment about men not being portrayed as sexual all the time. They certainly are in Cosmopolitan and similar magazines. Magazines made by women for women.0
