Hiya JD! I do so hope you had a really lovely time sleeping under the stars, yes, I know you will have done - good for you! You never know, given a mild winter could easily find you camping again, brilliant!!!

Very many thanks for your thought, they're much appreciated.

    Sue x

A shame, Hannah, but at least it was just the one, so, head up, look upon it as a blip and just carry on as you were doing which was in a superb way. Leave the alcohol until you're stronger as determined suggests.

BTW, great work on The Quitters Pledge, perfect! The app you said about is listed on the first page and is highly recommended by previous successful quitters.

    Sue xx

Fergie, I know you're not thinking of stopping using the patches and please don't!!! Some people are able to try it without, but there's always that huge risk so it has to be undertaken very, very carefully.

You're doing brilliantly so carry on as you are now and stay safe and nicotine-free. Now and again you'll get times as you did today (mostly when the mind wonders), but as time goes on it gets less and less and then just fades. Look towards a treat for all you've done as, by heck, you deserve it!! :T:T

Very many congratulations on 18 great SMOKE-FREE months, Lippy!!!! :T:T:T:T:T So much achieved and sooo much to be immensely proud of!!!! :D

Many thanks for your inspiring post, quantic, it's people like you who stop to help that really do help and inspire others to carry on to stop for good. :) Many congratulations to you!!!! :T:T:T:T:T

Today i had my last ciggie at 5.30 pm and taking it step by step. Got an easy week at work this week so ill be on here pretty much all day, may even give you hourly updates!!

Anywho 5 hrs now ha ha!

Well done then, Chris as it's around 11 hrs since you last smoked which is marvellous!!! Good to see you again and please remember that every hour without one is something to really feel proud about!! :D

I notice you said you were bored, when you stop the cigs the first thing you need to do is keep busy as it keeps your mind occupied. So, if you've got any hobbies now's the time to start them...or take up a new one..anything so long as it keeps your mind absorbed.

Or as determined says in her extremely ma'amish voice "Go and do some push ups till the moment pass!!!!"

If I remember rightly you were having breathing problems which isn't good for any smoker, especially a smoking soldier; so it you're ready to stop the fags then do so now while you choose rather than when you have to!! As someone has already said though - you have to want to stop!

Have a look at The Quitters Pledge in Hannah's(roberts) post above, it really will help you

Well done on all the hours achieved so far today! :T Best wishes.

    Sue xx

Keep strong and focused, determined....and brilliant work!!! :T:T

  • Morning

1 day 11 hours. Feeling in a completely different frame of mind from when i've quit before. Usually I quit because I know I should but this time I feel like I want to.

Good Lucky today Chris. Take it one day at a time. Try drinking glasses of water I've been drinking mine with ice through a straw. Think the straw gives me something to hold and play with.

  • Got a good one - my OH is planning to quite when he starts his new job - he reckons the break in routine will help, plus he's going from a stressy job to a less stressy one.

Can anyone give me pointers on how to help and support him? He smokes roll-ups, about 20 a day, and has done for at least 15-16 years. I have never smoked and really want him to quit as we both has asthma, but I'm not going to push him as he has to want to do it.

He is going in the right direction - he always has a cigarette after dinner so he helps me wash up instead, he always goes through a few while on the PC so he goes for a jog first and finds he doesn't want a cig after that - but quitting altogether seems to be a sticking point.

He has some patches and gum, and a loving and supportive girlfriend ^_^

What's the best way to help?

  • hi heartbreak_star
sounds like your fella is in fine hands with you to support him:T:T
changing job and routine is an excellent opp0rtunity to quit as he wont be associated with "those that do " so will be less tempted to join in
cutting down is a great place to start too , maybe not roll any in advance too, so if he feels if he really needs one will have to got through the process, and if he continues to help with washing up will have a job rolling one with wet hands ;)
also would have to stop what he was doing on pc to roll one so maybe suck a lolly pop instaed may help while surfing
start a saving pot with money saved to have a special treat with and lots of compliments on how fresher life is without the fags
if he feels the need for patches i would advise going to see a smoking cessation nurse at the health centre or pharmacy to advise on strengths etc
we are here too for lll the support you both need

    wish you both well

  • hi chris hope the smokers pledge is helping you today , your first fag free day...whoo hoo:j

well done hannah glad to hear "it feels different " this time wanting to quit is a great motivator, no longer wanting to smoke and sick of its drudgery and control of your life is a great thing to give up , nowt to loose only soooo much to gain

be proud and celebrate each and every moment

and if stuck in a tough moment, remember it will pass and smoking NEver makes anything better be free and stay free

Very well done, Hannah, you really do sound as though you're 10% committed to seeing this through and achieving ex-smoker or former smoker status. Go for it, you'll be so thrilled you did further down the line.

    Sue x

Hi Chris, whilst wishing the very best for you, I really think that if you truly do wish to stop you'd be better off initially in making an appointment at your Dr's surgery to see if an NRT would help.

Give it a try, it may be more helpful than you think.

    Sue x

Hi and welcome, heartbreak_star. You really are determined to help your OH, he's a very lucky man, especially as you yourself haven't smoked. Many non smokers really haven't an inkling of what stopping smoking is like, but you're doing your very best. Marvellous dedication for sure!

I've sent you the PM and there's a lot of help there, but, to be honest, you're both handling it wonderfully well. Anything he finds helpful is what he should do. Tell him about us and encourage him to read through the thread as there may be other ways he can read about.

If we can help him, we'd love to. :) Write down the following for him
    ********************************
    Quitters Pledge
"Today I promise not to smoke any cigarettes, tomorrow - if I wish - I may do."

Renew the pledge every morning on waking. This helps in not making quitting feel as though you're planning something lifelong, it helps trick the mind in taking it all one day at a time. The lifelong part you determine for yourself when you're ready.
    **********************************
All best wishes to you both.

    Sue xx

Hi JD, terrific advice there, thanks so much. Not my best day, but I'm off to bed now.

    Sue x

Best wishes for a wonderful day for all tomorrow.

  • Hi guys just popping my head round the door before I jump in the shower. Fergie how you doing today? Haven't seen you the last couple of days? (managed to get out of bed and in the shower though!)

Day 12 today and still going strong I am happy to report :j its weird because in some ways the thought of smoking pops in my head at times around doing stuff - my first long journey in the car, going to spend time with friends who I have always smoked with etc but at the same time I don't want to smoke and when I'm around said friend's it doesn't bother me. Went to see a friend I haven't seen in ages and she said she thought the two of us were going to drink wine and smoke and then I said I can't drink and I don't smoke so instead we had tea! :T

My smober stats say I have saved £38.25 :T and not smoked 162 cigs in that time:D

Am really enjoying running again - did my longest run in ages yesterday - 45 mins and I am definitely getting stronger again (gosh when I first started a couple of weeks ago I couldn't only run for a couple of minutes at a time and max jogging/running was 30 mins) now I do still walk every now and again to catch my breath but stamina is growing :D JD how are you finding C25K?

I have made a concerted effort to be healthy this week, eating fruit and veg, not eating loads of fatty carp, having ice poles for snacks and eating sensible portions as well as exercising and I really do feel good, very clean in the inside and expect to loose a lb or two as well :T

sorry to hear you had a difficult day yesterday Sue, hope today brings better things for you :A

Chris did you get through your first day?

Hannah you are doing so well, its very impressive! First couple of days are definitely the hardest!

heartbreak_star I think the best thing is listening to him when he wants to talk about it, encouraging him to get some support (here or with a cessation nurse/group). He could do what hannah has done and just keep cutting back and pushing the first one further back until she thought I'll just go without this one  good luck to him x
