Hi all I have been reading your posts and thinking about stopping smoking for a long long time. I am doing it tomorrow. I am fed up of coughing, stinking, always having to make sure I have everything I need in my bag so I can have a smoke and actually whistling when Im breathing at night lying my bed so then have to constantly clear my throat.
I have just finished a course of antibiotics for pleurisy, yet another chest infection caused by smoking and I am getting angry with myself for doing this to my body.
I have Allan carrs book on my ipod, an emergency supply of 4 patches left over from the last time i tried to stop and tomorrow i am making an appointment at my doctors for accupuncture. Any other suggestions on what i can do? Oh am also planning on getting out in the fresh air for a walk at least once a day.
One thing I am looking forward to which happened before when i stopped smoking, which makes me seem very superficial but hey, is the change in colour of the skin on my face it went from being an icky grey to more "alive" looking.
Thanks for listening to my rambles

Belladonna13, wishing you luck in finding a way to stop smoking. You sound so ready. At that stage where you know it is no longer a friend. It's not a real crutch, just imaginary. Like the so called 'good samaritans' who pretend they are attending to the injured but run off with their purses. Nicotine will pretend it is supporting and calming you but in reality it is doing the opposite whilst creating a need for your next cigarette.

Fergie42, you are so positive that I think you are just going to sail through your 'divorce' from cigarettes. If you could bottle and sell your attitude then you would be a millionaire!

Good luck Determined. Hope this time is right for you.

Hi Lollyfin, good luck for tomorrow. So many things to look forward to. My OH is still smoking and he has that horrible whistle, don't think he notices it half the time. When he wakes up he coughs like he's about to kick the bucket then rushes downstairs to go outside for his first cigarette. Rather smugly, I no longer have a cough and neither will you. Hope it all goes well tomorrow and Sue will be back on soon with her wonderful assortment of hints and tips to help you in the early days.

Hi lollyfin and a very warm welcome to you! So sorry to hear about the pleurisy you've just got over, but maybe it's been the kickstart you've needed to stop again - only this time, do yourself a real favour and don't go back! It's never, ever worth it as you'll possibly know.

You sound as though you've got all you need to get going, just remember, as JD's said, we're all here for you no matter how you feel. You'll have plenty of support and help to guide you through. If you have any weak times or times when you 'think' you want to throw it all in - please come here and let it all out!!

Moneymaker's our best AC book quitter here, a real star and will help you all she can too. :D

I'll send you a PM with a few helpful hints in a mo.

All our very best wishes to stop and stay that way!

    Sue xx

Good to see you, gettingready, it'll be so good to see a time when you are ready and rearing to go!

All the very best to you and all others out there thinking of chucking the awful weed. Give it a go, you have nothing to lose, but a whole lot to gain!

  • Hi just popping my head around the door to say I'm still here! Wish I could muster the excitement you feel at the moment fergie, but my mood is very low and everything is an effort (have been sat here trying to get up and go in the shower since 7.30!) but I'm committed to not smoking today so won't be long until I reach my 24hours....

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone x

getting ready. My advice is to take the plunge and try it. I am never ready to stop but once you get over the first cig not smoked it does get easier. Its the psychological fear of giving up that keeps us lighting another and another...

Good luck guys and thanks to all the lovely non-smokers helping us through x

Hi Hun and welcome to all the 'new starters' and lurkers.

If ever I needed convincing I am doing the right thing (which I don't by the way) it was last night.

My son started high school yesterday and I said to my husband we will pick him up after school (and my DD from juniors) and take them to Nando's as it is such a special day.

I had checked my bank account and whilst I don't get paid until Friday I couldn't believe the excess 'spending and treat' money I had left. Before I would have always ear-marked about £100 for fags through the week (for both of us BTW) but that is now my spending money.

Although I said we were skint what I really meant was we had no money left for treats etc at the end of the month after all the bills had been paid. I used to be so envious when the other mums were going out for tea during the week or popping away for the weekend. We just couldn't afford that. WELL NOW WE CAN :)

I sat in Nando's with my family pleased as punch and that only cost half of what I have saved now I'm into day 5.

I keep waking up in the middle of the night after some really vivid dreams and get to thinking - usually about me stopping as I still have to remind myself I am a non-smoker.

I have visualised the cravings as an old witch beckoning me over with her wizened pointy finger. I give her the finger back and giggle to myself and then the craving is gone.

Maybe I am really hallucinating - lol - but works for me.

Good luck everyone and cling on to what is important to you and what you want most from being a non-smoker.

PS. Getting xmas out of the way then going to book a weekend away at Center Parks. Woohoo!!
