    Hi,

I really do want to stop smoking.

Are there any diabetics on this thread who are able to give up?

I'm a diabetic, and of all the people that I know who have stopped, ate like mad as a substitute. I'm worried I would be too tempted to eat instead, and harm myself.

  • Hi everyone

Just thought I'd do a quick update as I haven't been on the thread over the weekend.

I am on day 7 but heaven only know how! I've had some quite tough moments over Saturday and this morning where I honestly thought the easiest thing to do was to go to the shop and buy some fags! However, I didn't and am feeling 'more normal' tonight. I can't believe how strong the feelings were - I had pretty much sailed through the first two or three days and this completely took me by surprise.

Well done everyone so far. Keep up the fantastic work!

    xx

PS. Hello Candy53 and welcome to the thread - sorry I don't know the answer to your question - I'm new(ish) on this thread too!

    Hi All!

Well done Anablle, proud of you.

Still going strong, had some tough times over the last couple of weeks but still have my resolve intact!

Good luck guys, we CAN and ARE doing it.

Hi Candy and a very warm welcome to the thread.

Through all the threads we've had on MSE, no one has ever said they were diabetic so sadly, I'm afraid I can't reassure you.

Why not ring your Dr's surgery and ask for an appointment with the Cessation Nurse? She (or your Dr) is best placed to help and advise you and to suggest which way is best to stop smoking.

If you've never tried to quit before then you may well be able to do so without any problems. Most of us who quit do turn to food as a form of comfort..help too, but there are ways round it! I'll send you a PM, look through that at the ideas that can help you - without using food.

Please, don't think that just because other diabetics have done so that you will be one of those who tries to harm themselves, we are all individuals and where one person has real problems there are many who don't have any at all. Seek help from those who can help you most...I'm sure they would far sooner you give up smoking than keep on with it because of the diabetes, it has to be a far more healthy way of life.

One thing's for sure - you'll never know unless you try! :) I'd advise you see a CN first, but if you really want to try...then do so, just take it a day at a time, as we all do. You have us here to chat to and to listen any time you need it. The thread is for you to let go of your feelings, good or bad. If you should feel tearful, let the tears fall as it's nature's way of releasing all the pent up feelings.

Think over all that I've written and see what you think would be best, see how you feel. Please don't worry though, it won't do any good anyway and often only makes matters worse.

All the very best to you, Candy, and please let us know what you're feelings are. PM me if you wish, I'll be glad to help. :)

    Hugs, Sue xxx

Hi sunshinesquirrel, well didn't you do so very well indeed! :T

You're normal, so don't worry at more difficult times. Truth is it can happen like that and take us quite by surprise, especially after we've had such a good start. It's not easy to quit, especially in the early weeks, but we get through, we have to!

The trouble is after smoking for so many years the effects of nicotine don't leave us quickly, and also you get the psychiatric nic who persists, just like it has throughout the years you've smoked, in nagging away at you to "have another". It'll take a little while for that to go, but it will, and the longer you remain free from ciggies the easier it is and the less time 'thoughts' last for.

Remember the feelings of euphoria at the ONE you got from the CM machine? Keep such feelings in your mind along with any other memories or plans you have; fill the mind with lovely thoughts, smoking has robbed you of too much over the years - don't let it take control of you anymore! You're in control now and you need to make sure it stays that way!!

You can do it, sunshinesquirrel, you know you can as you've done it before. Keep remembering how you mastered it today and remember - the easiest thing is never to give into one! It's harder to stay free, but then that's what the journey's all about...freeing yourself from the burden that ciggies are.

Stay strong and determined, you'll get there. :)

    Hugs, Sue xxx

Well done you, warez! :T We're still bound to get a few such times after years of smoking, also you weren't well last week, the week before too, I think and that's taken it's toll. However, you're a battler and will push on and remain as strong as you need to be.

Your last line sums it up beautifully and I'm positive you'll always keep it in mind as you keep remaining focused. You're getting there, warez, be proud, I am for you! ;)

Hi guys  just popping my head through the door in my lunch break. Just wanted to say AMAZING annablle, really proud of you! That first social event with people you used to smoke with is a real challenge. I remember mine and it was at about the same point as you. The thought pops into your mind and then if you say no (which you did :T) it goes again! Well done x

Welcome Candy hope you will be very happy here. Happy to hear you have taken those first steps to freedom, luckily Sue will wrap her supporting and smoothing comments around you. I do believe Sue's support has been the biggest factor in my ceasing success! Keep posting on here whenever you have urges and someone will be around to give you a helping hand.

Sunshine & Warrez sorry you've faced a hurdle, they come and go sadly. But they do get less and less x
