Hope you don't mind me jumping aboard! I haven't smoked for 12hrs 26mins. I had my last one this morning in the car before I went to work.

I decided about a week ago it was time to give it another shot and since then, had been trying to really think about every smoke I had and weighing up in my mind whether I was really enjoying it. I think, in all honesty, there were about 2 out of approx 15 per day.

.......an elastic band around my wrist for good measure!

I've flicked through the thread tonight instead of having a fag after my tea and you have done fantastically well. You should all be so proud.
Hello sunshinesquirrel and a very warm welcome to the thread! :D If my reckoning is correct then you will already NOT have smoked for
1 whole day and 6 hours which is tremendous!!!! :T Very well done you!

Well done in filling normal fag times with viewing the thread for inspiration as well as being sensible in helping yourself. :grinheart So good to see you've already picked up on warez's elastic band. ;)Doing anything like that or hobbies, exercise etc, will help no end in the battle to get back to where you were.....and this time complete the journey!

I think some men can be social smokers, but I truly don't believe we women can, we're affected more than them with hormones.

Yes, we will all wish you luck, but where quitting's concerned it's you who will be creating that!! So, give it all you've got in ways of determination, courage and willpower. Look for a PM that I'll be sending in a moment.

    All best wishes!

    Sue xx
You asked earlier about the thoughts of smoking. Honestly now they are just very fleeting. No rhyme or reason, just happens every so often (like yesterday when we were going to Ikea in Lakeside. Coming off the M25 onto the Thurrock exit and the thought came into my mind, strong though.

Hi determined, I'm not the only one who's taste buds got changed after Christmas then, mine I'm sure was my own fault as I had too many sweet things and it made my body crave them after the event. I'm ok now thankfully.

I know you've had a lot going on with the house and especially the kitchen, could yours perhaps be due to your body needing sweet things in order to temporarily give you more energy? They say we should listen to our bodies, but as we all know from our experience with nic, sometimes we know it's only asking for things it's been used to rather than what it needs!

You'll be much better off when you can get back to running.

Re the thoughts, they really are getting better! It's really good to see they're are that few, though are you sure the "on the way to Ikea one" aren't excitement induced? I used to get them whenever I was excited about going back to the New Forest which was home to us both until a couple of years after marriage.

Anyway, you're doing so well, D, and I'm thrilled to bits at your progress! :j

Seriously though, fags feel like the dim distant past. I think affectionately of them every now and again, but then pfft the thought is gone.

I know what determined means with regard to food though. I reckon it's your body trying to replace one high with another. Nicotine being the first one, sugar being the second.

Hi warez, so sorry to hear you're still suffering, the one good thing you've got from it though is not thinking of the ghastlies! :D

I love that highlighted paragraph above, and isn't it just wonderful on reaching that point. :grinheart

I'm sure you're right about the sweetness highs that replace the nic ones, the best thing we can do is try our best to keep it minimal so the weigh-gains isn't too much.

Be sure you're properly well before doing the exercising again, but once you are there's nothing quite like it for giving us a huge buzz.

Get well soon, but meanwhile be so chuffed at how far you've travelled! The distance is great so far, but the entire journey is brilliant and such an accomplishment!!

Good to see a very cheery you, anablle!! I'm hoping you will feel even further encouraged at being so far ahead right now! Keep up the smoothies. :j

Right then folks, please take not of the following words of encouragement from warez.

  • Hi everyone

Just in from work and wanted to thank you for your messages of support. I'm well into day 2 now and feeling absolutely fine. One or two little cravings which have crept up around the times I would normally smoke but one ping of my elastic band and a couple of deep breaths and its over!

I had a sneaky wee shot of the carbon monoxide machine at work today (I work in a GP surgery and do all the admin for the smoking cessation clinic - ironic I know!) My CO reading on thursday when I first ordered my patches was 18 - today its a very respectable 3.

The girls at work and I have signed up to do a 13 mile charity walk in May so exercise will hopefully be my key to keeping myself amused and not piling on the pounds.

Thanks again and well done everyone so far.

Superb work, sunshinesquirrel, very well done indeed!! It's good to hear you're feeling so well.

I have to admit to a wry grin on seeing your job..and for further irony I guess your name is Mrs Ash! ;) Doesn't going from a huge high of 18 down to 3 so swiftly make you feel as though you've already started to achieve!

You have something wonderful to look ahead to with the charity walk now and will feel so much healthier after it's completed. Well done and keep going well.

  • Hi Sue, lovely to see you posting and getting a lovely big cuddle with your kind and soothing words! What about you? What are you giving up or are you perfect already?!

Very pleased to say I have resisted temptation again today. Was thinking about gettig a pack of crisps on my way home tonight but at the last minute resisted going left at the round about and came home and had a hot choc and a little ham instead. They say protein satisfies certain receptors which carby/sugary foods don't and you know I don't feel munchy at all now

Sunshine you're doing marvelously! And I mean I am marvelling seeing as I have been on the floor each time I quit! I am SO determined now I won't put myself through that torture again!

13 miles should be fun, am sure it'll be hard work though! Me and my oh love to walk and go for treks whenever we can. We went for a 7 hour walk a few months back and that last hour was a bit too much!

Good luck with tonight and tomorrow although I'm sure you won't need it! x

Ahhh, thanks for that, D, it means a lot. Perfect me?? Good job hubby's not here right now or he'd have his own interpretation of that!

I daren't let myself have chocolate or I'd be at it all the time and HUGE!!!! Same with cheese and salty thing......like crisps!! We try to eat as sensibly as possible, I need to otherwise it affects the asthma very quickly and then I'm gasping up the hills. :(

You be sure to leave those crisps alone! One will only lead to the next one following quickly on behind. I'm sure it is true that protein satisfies the receptors which carbs and sugary foods don't, so at least we can always bear that in mind.

My DH hits pangs with tinned pears or peaches, but I'm not supposed to have either because of the bloomin ua thyroid...I do have his juice though! :rotfl: I'll leave that bit in as it's definitely pertinent, though not sure all minds are clean!

Look after yourself, D, and be so very, very proud! ;) I am too.

    Sue xx

Hi warez, I really hope you're feeling a little bit better at least, but if not that you soon will. Just think, you'd probably feel 10 times worse if you'd still been puffing!! :(

    Get well hugs, Sue xx

Where are you, anablle? Still doing well I know, but we'd love to have you here chatting to us.

    Hugs, Sue xx

Right now, sunshinesquirrel, you'll be well into your third day, coping well too with all you wrote yesterday. Keep looking forward and staying positive and you'll be doing wonderfully.

    Evening All!

    Feeling much better today!

Hope everyone has had a good day and not let nic thoughts dominate!

  • Hi Sue and everyone!

You are quite correct - day 3 now and feeling fine thanks. I'm surprised actually that I appear to be coping well but I am aware that its still early days!! It was smoking clinic day today at work so I had another wee shot of the carbon monoxide meter - its now down to 1 and I felt really chuffed.

I would normally buy 100 cigarettes a week but never bought any last week as I knew that a quit date was looming. So last week and this week I've put away the cash so I have £62 in the savings pot.

Hope all is well with everyone and keeping focused!

    xx

PS. Sue - I meant to say thanks for the PM you sent me

Hello there, warez! I'm so pleased to 'hear' you feeling so much better. Isn't it marvellous, you've been rough, and now feeling so much better - but no temptation to when the next ciggy would be puffed - as used to be the case for us all in the long and distant past - utter magic!!!! :j

I love your words above, so true too.

    Keep going strong!

Hi sunshinesquirrel and VERY well done on Day 3 AND with blowing a ONE in the CM meter!! :T Do you tend to use much gum?

What some wonderful savings you'll soon have by you too, another great incentive to always be thinking about.

You're most welcome to the PM, everyone gets one as I always hope it might just be the start off they need.

To all those who are also stopping
....and all those thinking about doing so, please stay strong/jump in, it really is so worth it and you'll only ever gain!!
