That's your interpretation, you did say you couldn't make your mind up.

However, you do repeatedly ask questions or post problems, in numerous threads, all about the same machine, never seem to takeany of the advice given, repeat the same random "but's"/"what if's", and rarely stay logged in long enough to follow answers up in a timely fashion, and often not at all.

The first time you asked the question was 18 months ago.. This thread alone has had 80 replies, and 3000 views, and nothing has progressed from the first post. There are many other threads about new machines around too if the answers don't suffice.

You haven't reinstalled windows, you haven't posted a hijackthis log, you haven't bought a new machine or psu - Is that ever likely to change?

18 months:shocked: Seriously?! I knew its been long, but didn't know that long.

Ok, I take your point and I suppose it wasn't sarcastic. I will try and make some kind of decision soon :o

If chrome crashes, stop using it, or reinstall it, it's heavy on ram compared to other browsers.

The best way of cleaning up a slow or badly infected machine is to backup all your data to an external drive, and do a factory restore using the factory restore partition (see manual or manufacturers website) or Windows disc. The alternative is to do it manually as follows (the list may look daunting, but should take less than an hour of effort (apart from virus scans)) :-

uninstall babylon search / alot / NCH Toolbar/ vshare toolbars

uninstall x10 and wamjam and activesync unless you use them

If you are posting because the machine is slow and haven't done so already, post your physical ram total, commit charge total, commit charge peak by doing CTRL ALT DEL, Task manager, performance - after virus infections, and bloated security applications, this is the principle reason XP machines slow down so this information is important to help you

If you're desktop is cluttered with icon or files or quicklinks, tidy them up, either by deleting or moving to a folder.

This is a general guide on cleaning up infections and speeding up pc's, https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849 , the following advice is based on the contents of that thread, but tailored to your machine, if you've followed the thread fully since posting a hijackthis log, much of this advice will be redundant. All the software you need to install is free

Making any changes to a PC setup always comes with a slight risk of something going wrong, the worse case scenario is an unbootable PC - ideally you should have got a backup of important data on dvd or external disk, and a disk image backup (http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp) or windows disc/factory restore partition available before you start. In the unlikely event that anything does go wrong, post on another pc for advice.

If you want a speedy machine, uninstall your AV software listed below, and use windows firewall and the free version of AVAST as your antivirus solution, http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/ (if prompted to install any optional google toolbars/chrome etc during installation, untick the option during the install process)

This is a list of (or remnants of) security software you have already - uninstall them (after installing Avast) in Control Panel (add/remove programs or programs/features) to keep your PC running smoothly, too much overlapping or bloated security or useless tuning software can have a drastic effect on performance - always leave one resident scanner running (eg avast/avira etc)

If you haven't already done it, Install Malwarebytes and do a FULL (not quick) scan (after updating it), fix anything found before closing, otherwise you'll have to do it all over again. You may get prompted asking if you want to run the free 14 day trial during install, I suggest you decline this offer, as it will slow things down. If anything was found reboot the machine before continuing. http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

When you've done all that, reboot, note the commit charge before opening any applications, and post it along with a fresh hijackthis log and any logs of infections

When you are happy the machine is working optimally, backup to an external drive, using the image this disk feature (not clone) of http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx and create a macrium rescue cd at the end of the backup, then if anything goes wrong in future, you can restore a fully working system with all data and programs intact, in minutes

Thanks. I will certainly do that. I must admit, my desktop is crammed with icons. The desktop does randomly refresh quite a lot. I did uninstall CHrome and went back to Firefox but instead of a blue screen the PC shut down with no warning. Just power off and dead. Wen't back to Chrome, installed again and the same blue screen but it is so inconsistent it's hard to see any pattern. One day I get a lot and the next just one or none. A few years ago I couldn't get it to boot at all. I was advised by a friend who tinkers with PCs that I should stop automatic updates to Windows XP as it was causing the problems. Since 2009 it has been switched off.

    My ram is 1GB.

    Commit charge and peak commit?

Both firefox and chrome use more ram than IE, all the bloat running at startup will slow it down and could be contributing to crashes.

Ok, I am working through it. So far I am up to removing security virus software. Now I have always thought that AVG was the best free antivirus. I have had it for years so a bit reluctant to get rid. As for McAfee, it doesn't show in the add/remove programs list. Babylon also doesn't show but it is still there in the Explorer browser bar.

I have logged the Ram data for you:

    Physical Ram: 1048048
Commit Charge total - around 858900 but impossible to take a reading as it is constantly shifting around in numbers.
    Peak: 934440

Really appreciate the time you have taken over this for me.
