My PC is 8 years old, with 1 GB of ram. It's too slow.

If you spent some time trying it, instead of posting "but's", you might find out it's not an issue. Your PC was 5 years old when you first asked about buying a replacement.

Photo's might have a few more pixels than a few years ago, but the file sizes are still small compared to 1GB of ram, and photo editing is moving bits about, something that processors have been doing speedily for some time.

So does everyone else agree with this regarding photo/sound and video editing ?

Other than a couple of hours of your time, which is considerably less than you have spent vacillating on this thread, what have you got to lose by trying the sticky on how to speed up a PC? You may be pleasantly surprised. :)

Will have a recovery partition. If you need the XP disc, I can find it for you.

I could get this PC back to near how it was when I bought it but realistically, processing power for burning DVD/video/music and photo editing isn't going to be anywhere near as much as the power of today's Pc's. Also, the motherboard of this PC could suddenly go and then it can't be replaced.
