dear Granny I hope you are fit and well so your op can go ahead as planned. What a dilemma though to have to choose to have it done soon or wait for a bed with more intensive care nearer. I don't know what I would go for.....

    Thanks for all the messages

I'm not in a very good head space at the moment

I had a call from the hospital yesterday and as I expected my operation has been cancelled. The anaesthetist gave my consultant the option of get someone else or cancel as he wasn't prepared to deal with me at the private hospital. My consultant took his advice on board and cancelled me. He has placed me on his list at another hospital and I'm going to ring this afternoon to discuss but it's going to be later rather than sooner.

The decision had nothing to do with current health but with an under lying aged condition that may rear its head during/post operative. I honestly think he's being over cautious and the nurse pretty much said he was covering himself. There was nothing I could say or do to change his mind.

To say I'm gutted is an under estimation but I'm coming to terms with it.

I've not told work yet as my sick note covers me until next Tuesday, I've yet to decide whether I'll go back Tues/Wed. I'd love to stay off work now so I could focus on being as healthy as possible before the op but can't really as I may need the time off afterwards. I'll make my decision once I've got a clearer idea of a likely date

OH has been very supportive and despite feeling shattered yesterday we had DGD2, who always manages to brighten my day plus cuddles and kisses from little man and DGD1 when I went with DS to collect her from school.

So what have I learned today?

Private healthcare is for me a a waste of money - I rang them to see if I could be treated at a different hospital as some on their lists have the extra care departments on hand if needed - response 'No, if it's been cancelled there, it'd be the same at all the other hospitals. Go back to NHS'

My consultant hasn't written up his notes yet so his secretary doesn't know if he's marked me as urgent or routine. If routine - 9 month wait, if urgent 3 month wait

Previous consultant has me pencilled in for April, going in on my wedding anniversary. Despite this and the fact that he may not do the complete op I need, opting instead for 2/3 seperate operations, it looks as though this is my best option. This date is subject to change, depending on cancelled slots and I will not know for definite until mid March.

For now it looks as though D Day is now 56 days away :(

    Hum granny
Speak nicely to the secretary and ask her if she can see if your consultant works at one of the other hospitals, or recommend another consultant at one of the hospitals (with the resources)
get a copy of the notes with the assessment and then Write a strongly worded letter to the private company clearly explaining this can be done at x y z hospitals. And therefore it would not be refused, stupid computer says no types!
Get backs to your GP and dissolve into tears lay it on thick and Oscar winning performance so he is fully aware of the trauma this is causing
    Take notes with you.
I am sure this can be done more quickly ....

Thanks for the support all. The problem is our holiday, which is only 5 weeks away. I think I'm going to have to keep everything crossed that the appointment in 8 weeks time goes ahead and that the consultant does what I need instead of his preferred choice of 2/3 seperate operations. Although my situation is getting me down, if I knew it was definitely going to be sorted out in 2 months I could cope. This will also mean I'm not post operative on our holiday, which may have caused problems.

I'm devastated about Monday and about not being able to see that consultant as he was much better but in turn the anaesthetist was not. Luckily, due to the date in April, OH is off work for 5.5days from the date of admission so the original problem of it being difficult for him has gone. If I'm 100% honest that date suits us better.

I'm not giving up, I'm still going to try to get a date in the next 2 weeks and am also going to try to get a date with the new consultant but the NHS is in such a poor state at the moment people are waiting far too long for things to be done. Luckily my problem is not life threatening just life limiting.

I'm going to write a letter of complaint to the private health care people as I do think they could have been more helpful. I'm going to have to go back to work until our holiday as I may need the time off afterwards. I can't afford to be off so long that I get reduced to half pay. I'm sure HE will be supportive and I'm going to take it easy as I don't want a relapse pre op. I'll probably not go back to work after my holiday so I have some time to focus on my health.

All this has given me a headache and is not helping my stress levels.
