Lack of communication is destroying our relationship

I was in a relationship like this until recently. I ignored the red flags for years and settled. I work away and get out with friends and I used this to tolerate the relationship. We went on holiday with our respective children a couple of years ago for the first time in 6 years of being together. My daughter became ill and my other half dismissed it as her 'being like her mother'. She started vomiting so I took her to the doctor who called an ambulance. She ended up on a drip, had an ear canal infection and nearly couldn't fly home. My other half stayed by the pool all day as I sat in the hospital, not one call all day, hardly anything said when I got back.
This is one example in a litany of someone who thought of nobody but themself. So things went downhill quickly and it was a slow messy breakup. It was finalised late last year with what I think of a loose ends to tie up quite recently.
Anyway, despite it being absolutely the right thing, it was still hard. There is no denying that you will have to go through the grieving process but eventually you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner.
It may be easier to journal how you feel now so you can look back when the rose tinted specs come out later if you think you have made a mistake.
How I wish I had got out sooner. Yes it was still hard, good memories float to the top and the change in your world can seem scary at times. But eventually you will know you have made the right decision.
Good luck0
