  • Got through by skin of my teeth at 9.50pm!! Think lady I spoke to did something wrong though! I pay into a personal pension each month. According to tax credit notes, you can deduct that amount from your income. She said to deduct £300 from that too though? On the notes it says to deduct £300 from "other" income, but not about pension payments. They now have my income at £300 more than it should. Hopefully won't make a difference!! But still confused me!

Just check the award when it arrives and if there is a mistake - get it corrected. You have 30 days to do this.
  • Tried to call several times yesterday but got the same response regarding no-one being available so have sent the form of with a large letter 1st class stamp so they should get it today. Had difficulties completing the renewal as was querying some P11D info but couldn't wait for my ex-employer to clarify the info so have just done what I think is right. Re the previous post regarding pension contributions that it is the gross figure (after the 20% tax relief is added) that you deduct from your income. What was the £300 deduction in respect of?

I tried up to 9-45pm last night ( I mean the night of 31st) getting so far on the system and then being told to ring back later. Then I tried another 3 times this time getting the same message as soon as I got through that they were unable to take my call.

So having been looking at this thread earlier in the day I rang the "overseas" number and got straight through. I explained my vain attempts to reach them on the correct number and that I was ringing her number as a last resort. She told me I shouldn't have done it but we went through the process in any case and got it all finished by just after 5 past 10.
Next year I think I will sort it all out a few weeks before!!

Just as a slight aside, now that all the panic is over (or not, as the case may be), I just tried to phone HMRC re my tax affairs. All very familiar. Sat through endless recorded messages and then got "Sorry, we can't take your call right now blah blah blah..." Exactly the same. Anything major going on with HMRC tax at the moment? I don't think so. I love these people.
  • Hi all, I too am experiencing difficulties getting in touch with tax credits, I sent my renewal off by post back in May so I thought that would be sorted. Today I tried to ring them to inform them that my partner has returned to work but after the same annoying automated message I was told they cannot take my call and to call later then the phone went dead :( 10 minutes later the postman cam with a letter telling me that my tax credits were being stopped because I hadn't renewed my claim!!!! WHAT?! I posted the letter they must not have received it :@ But how am I supposed to sort both issues out If I cannot get in touch with them. I don't suppose I will be better off anyway now that myself and my partner are both working it will only be about £20 a month we will be entitled too but, still, how is this service of use to anybody?
  • Its really busy at the moment with all the terminated claims which is the reason why people are having trouble contacting them at the moment.
No One I Think Is In My Tree.
  • I have tried calling tax credits helpline for the past 3 days and yet still not got through!!! Why can't they say at the beginning of the call that they can't answer instead of making me listen to a 3 min message then cutting me off !!!!

I think its deliberate. It appears they prefer written communication.
