Here's why I stopped going............... I wear hearing aids and rely on the loop system at the pics, but to get the headset part of the loop the cinema want a debit/credit card to hold while you use the loop. I've offered to leave a £10 or £20 not but they wont have that. I gave them my card once and the guy just put it in an unlocked draw!!!! I didn't feel comfortable having my card out of my sight for the length of time to watch a film.
I asked the halifax what they thought of handing my card over, the poor woman just about fell off the chair.

    It probably wasn't reported.

Even though it's a term that some people will find offensive, IMO it really depends on how it is used.
Many people will talk about "going for a !!!!!!" and not give it a second thought, and even though it's not an ideal word to use, is it really any worse that talking about Yanks, Brits or Aussies? (provided of course that it is not actually used as an insult).

Yeah I can see where you are coming from but I think chink is quite a bad term to use. Its alot worse than brit or aussie I don't think people always use !!!!!! in a detrimental way but it's a fine line. If I was going for a curry I wouldn't say "going for a p*ki" so I don't really see the difference.

I've been accused of being too picky about racist terms on this forum but I do think this is a bad I one

'Chink' is obviously offensive because of the association with the physiognomy of the eyes.

As you say, '!!!!!!' is treading a fine line because it's unclear what the etymology of the word is. It's certainly safest not to use it but I wouldn't immediately or necessarily assume racism if I heard it used.

No one says that because, although a great many (I think most in England) 'Indian' restaurants are run by people from Pakistan or whose immediate forebears came from there, the cuisine is universally known as 'Indian'. And no one gets upset if you say you are going 'for an Indian' (although Americans can become quite alarmed if you tell them you could 'murder an Indian').

Well, it's certainly a great deal more questionable than Brit:British, Aussie:Australian or Jap:Japanese because 'chink' is not a simple contraction of 'Chinese'.

I love going to the cinema - but only a couple of local ones. I've been to a few cinemas away from home and find they're a bit rowdy, which I don't like and if they were like that in my local ones it would put me off going (local = 40+ miles away are the closest ones). But i've found i've been very cold lately when in the cinema and it is putting me off - they must rack up the a/c.

If I lived closer i'd buy a monthly card for but as it costs about 20 pounds in petrol to get there, I don't. I went to the cinema on Friday and the tickets and petrol alone cost almost 50 pounds (stupid keyboard, no pound sign) - and because we're away from home we usually need something to eat as well. The most I go is twice a month - too expensive for any more. Some months I don't go at all - it all depends if it's something someone really wants to see.

The 25 mile round trip to the nearest! Add that to the cost of admission and it's a no,no.
A rented DVD is a better personal choice.
Another "flawed" poll with incorrect or insufficient options.

I wish our nearest one was just a 25 mile round trip - ours is 90.

Our town doesn't even have a dvd rental shop anymore.

That's madness! I remember when restaurants used to do this if you, say, wanted to sit outside. They asked for your card then stuck it in a pint pot behind the bar or the till. It soon became evident that this is about the easiest way to get your card cloned and I'm amazed that a cinema is still doing it. What a bunch of idiots.

What cinema was it? If you're keen to go, a quick letter to head office would no doubt clear up this silly little practice and allow you to leave something else as a deposit.

The cost - I went for the first time in months last night, and the spiralling costs are crazy - DOUBLE price for a 3d film? £7.20 for a medium drink + popcorn?

No wonder the pirate sites are doing well right now...

3Ds not double anywhere is it? It's about £3 extra last time I looked. Cheapest cinema ticket price seems to be about £7. So nowhere near double. You don't have to go see things in 3D. Although cinemas do annoy my when the only option for a film is in 3D.

I've stopped going cinema often because I no longer work in one and dont get to see films for free lol. I tend to use my nectar points when I go cinema. The one in Westfield London is really nice and it's cheaper than my local in North West London. So when I do go, I go there, it also has the Xtreme screens, which can be good if I've got the cash. There's less disruptive people in Westfield I've found than ones on the outer parts of London, like the one I worked in!

a commute of about an hour each way plus cost of tickets puts me off. I never really bother with the snacks/drinks/popcorn but again overpriced.

Last film I saw (on holiday) was Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Before that, Kings speech. for the two tickets £13 odd ? day/week of release, kings speech dvd could be picked up for £8. I know you don't get the whole "cinema experience" with a dvd but at least you can hit pause and go to the loo!
