The Great 'Mother's Day Pressie For Under A quid' Hunt

  • How about a box of kisses - all you need is a cardboard box and a letter for the inside of the box. You say in the letter how much you love your mother and how the box is full of kisses - and give a list of things that you are sending a kiss for - a kiss for making your birthday cakes when you were a kid (even better if you can remember a really special one); a kiss for making your packed lunches; for buying your first bra (ladies only for that one!); for supporting you through relationship break ups; for being a great babysitter - you get the idea and the list is endless. Decorate the box.

This isn't an original idea of mine, think I read it in a short story or a poem or something - but I have used it once - and it went down a treat :-)

Well may not be much use to other people - but I have a friend who works in the 'Card Factory' so gets a discount on an already good value store.

So I got a nice card, a 'nan' mug and coaster set and a 'nan' photo frame for only about 1.50! (should have cost about 7 pound)

Its got Nan on it because its from me and my girls and she got a photoframe with a 'gran' on it last year of her and my eldest so this year shes getting a photo of her and my youngest - and at that price I couldt resist the mug as well

My mom is allergic to alot of cosmetics, soaps etc so I have come up with a good substitute. I will buy a normal run of the mill family pack of soaps (ones I know she can use) that cost about 80p for 4 bars, open the outer wrapper and then wrap each bar of soap in coloured tissue paper using colours that compliment eachother. Then tie them together with some ribbon.

If I use 3 bars of soap, 3 small pieces of tissue paper and some ribbon it should cost less than £1 and it means that I can give my mom a luxurious looking present for next to nothing.

(you could also use left over wrapping paper)

(Not mine but an example so you can see what I mean)

  • I like Bluesky49's idea! And to make it easier Tiscali are doing a page at the moment that allows you to choose a promise then a design and they will creat a voucher for you to print out. Very professional looking! The page address is http://www.tiscali.co.uk/events/mothersday/features/vouchers.html

But remember to KEEP your promises!!

There are lots of primula plants around at the moment for about 49p. You could buy a container of some kind from a charity shop - a small basket or a bowl - look in your garden/local park/hedgerow for a bit of ivy with roots attached and some moss - find the piece of ribbon you saved from the Christmas choccys (or is that just me?) and put together your own little planted bowl. Depending on the container it could look really unusual. I wish I could do this for my Mum but she's no longer with us I'm afraid.

A few years ago I was particularly skint and came up with this idea at Mother's Day. I bought Mum a 99p terracotta garden plant pot, a basic one like you would get in Wilko's or B&Q. I then painted it with a mixture of my left over emulsions and tester pots and gave it a top coat of varnish.

I'm not very artistic, I basically gave it a base coat of white, then swirled a mixture of colours all over it with a sponge. I never expected it to last more than one winter, but at least 8 years on and it still has pride of place in her garden. :)

I tell you what I would really treasure for myself though - and that's a blimmin' lie-in!
  • The best pressies I ever got from my kids were when we were all particularly strapped for cash. I got a home made card with home made vouchers with things like " this voucher entitles the bearer to one foot massage", " a home cooked meal", " an evening babysitting", and my favourite " a promise not to spoil a movie by laughing at you crying at it". I treasured each one and thoroughly enjoyed spending them.

    A suitcase for m-i-l? hehe...

    j/k.

All I want for Mother's Day is a home-made card and a great big hug.

Last year dd gave me a (washed) Actimel bottle covered with acetate and tissue paper gathered up around it and tied at the neck with ribbon, and a few little fake flowers in it. It had turned out really nice, even though she was only 7 and it still sitting next to my bedside lamp. The people at Girls Brigade supplied the material, GB costs just 50p, so it qualifies for under a pound!
You could do similar with crocii from the garden and some wrapping paper.
