Thanks for the tips. I telephoned on Saturday morning and Virgin Media were very helpful, they upgraded my TV package to the next highest for the same price for 6 months. I just need to remember to cancel the upgrade in 5 months. The wait on the telephone was less than expected, only 10 minutes.0

I've been on hold just under 30 minutes now! Will hopefully update soon with good news and be watching some better channels tonight
If not i'll move to Sky as their package
Update: after talking to a really nice guy I am now on the XL package (from M) at no extra cost. We are on the 3 for £30 package.
I just said I was going to move to Sky as the telly was now pants and that sky do all 3 services for £26. He said 'but you do have to pay an additional £11 for the line rental' I said 'no, they do a basic telly for £15 so with the £11 rental it is still only £26 therefore cheaper and with better channels'. Then he offered me the XL package no questions.
Anyway two thumbs up for VM, dead nice guy on the other end of the line and it doesn't do any harm to be polite and friendly0 -
Is it just me???
I phoned them and said that while I supported what they were trying to do I was still paying for channels I no longer receive. I was told by a very curt lady that I was paying for a package not channels and the contract stated the content of the package could change at any time. When I told them that I could get all the channels, including the ones they now don't have, for cheaper if I switched to Sky she told me she would be happy to cancel my account if I gave her the details. :mad:0 -
Bill C - what number are you ringing? I used the one on the back of my bill and just pressed the options to cancel.
Just try ringing back another night and see what you can do. The guy I spoke to had no problems giving me the extra once he knew I was serious about leaving.0 -
It took me ages (via various routes - the longest a two hour 10 min wait and still didn't get through; wish they'd change that inane music  ) but this is what VM have given me:
was on XL phone with unlimited calls + 2mb Broadband (its all we need for emails etc) + old "starter" TV package (from Telewest) for £41. A nice man on VM customer services reduced this to £25.45 for as long as we stay with VM !!! :T
We had Telewest phone + TV in our previous house but when we moved it was to a house with a BT phone line. We moved to Telewest to have BB installed and at the time it came with a free TV package for 12 months - this was put in one of the bedrooms as we already had Sky TV in the lounge (was genuinely thinking of moving to sky free BB and Sky talk (unlimited for £5 per month + BT line when (we were) paying £25 with VM. I know this is being greedy but it got me thinking - so I've now been on the phone to Sky to say I definitely wanted to "disconnect" our Sky TV service. They put me through to "disconnections" who asked a series of questions and have now got our existing SKY package down from £43.50 to £38.50 (minus a few channels which we're getting for free from our new Digital telly anyway - so we were in effect paying Sky for channels we were already getting for free). £5 more in our piggy bank rather than in Mr Murdoch's (a small sum I know but its £60 over a year). Anyway - was so impressed with the VM service (their BB Tech support is excellent by the way) that I've been back on the phone to a nice man called Gary in customer Services and enquired about swopping Sky for VM in the lounge - VM will put in a new cable box for this at no charge (once the Sky One saga is clearer that is 'cos we're huge '24' and 'Lost' fans and couldn't bear to give it up now mid series - yes, sad I know - should get out more). Thanks to all of the posters on this site for tips on haggling (a new skill I think I've now acquired) and thanks to Martin for starting this whole thing off in the first place !!! :money:0 -
My result, I was on Broadband L, Phone M & TV L for £47. Initially I got that increased to Broadband L, Phone L & TV XL for £36. After reading some of the posts on this thread I thought I could do better & now have the above package for 6 months at £26.
Interestingly, the guy thought the Sky channels would be back soon, as SKY One's flagship programmes were now down 30% in viewing figures & that the advertisers & programme sponsors were not too amused.0 -
I think they must be getting stricter with what they offer as so many people are getting huge discounts, their profits are being hit quite hard.0

I did the same excellent results.
Does anyone know if their new charges are legal?
As not only do they charge you a £5 fee for not paying by Direct Debit. (is this allowed?)
They are now also charging £10 for late payment fee. (is this allowed and do you think I can claim it back?)

God you really can get something for nothing!
I had read this thread last night but it was too late to phone VM as they had closed at 8pm. I not too good at bargaining and frankly wasn´t looking forward to the prospect.
When I got home from work today I got sent a Sky flyer offering me a ¨Rescue Package¨ this is the Sky TV 2 package, broadband and free uk and weekend calls for a mere £15. (BT phoneline so this would be extra.)
After waiting approx 30 minutes to get through I spoke to Neil on the retentions line. (150 then option 3-2-3 )The poor dude was obviously very sick of giving things away free all day and it really came across in his voice.
Basically I put my cards on the table. I´ve been on VM´s 3 for £30 for ages. I get basic TV, 2mb broadband and a phone line for this price. I didn´t want to lie and say that I must have SKY cos frankly I thrilled to see the back of it. But what I did say was that obviously the cost involved here could not be dismissed and I said I was tempted, value wise.
After he told me that with the BT line the price would obviously go up, I said I had a line installed by my employer which i don pay for cos it´s part of my job - so that wouldn´t be an issue. He offered Sky Sports and movies - upgrade to supreme TV for £52.50. I said Sky as part of the rescue deal they sent me were offering £15 for the package plus a further £10 for sports or movies - that´s still less than what I paying now.
I went onto mention Virgin plus and the long and the short of it is that for my current 3 for £30 I got upgraded TV to supreme and a V+ box at no extra charge - indefinitely!!!!!!
I´m stunned.
Thanks everybody---and Martin....I may have to propose soon...the guy is saving me a fortune!!!:beer:0
