    Hi,

I'm going to ask a slightly rude but necessary question, is the modem actually on COM1, as far as windows is concerned - I have seen (admittedly not often) cases where the physical COM1 is seen by Windows as COM3

It's shown as COM1 on the modem properties. If I change to any other COM port other than 1 or 2, I get a Windows error message saying no such port exists.

Secondly - check that there are no extra spaces on the spreadsheet where you typed COM1 - it is quite picky, COM must be in capitals, followed by the numeric part with no spaces before or after,

Double checked and confirmed as OK

Thirdly, make sure nothing else is trying to access the modem - windows treats them on a first come first served basis - although you _should_ get an error message in that case

I'm pretty sure nothing else is accessing it

Copy the contents of the log file & PM them to me & I will take a look to see if they give any clues (do this after you have checked the other things, I will be evaluating the results on that basis)

The modem log records nothing of the attemps of the program to access it, not a single line of code. It does however record a huge list of commands associated with a standard windows DUN routine. From that it would seem the modem is 'deaf' to any commands from the program, however as above XP grumbles if I attempt to enter a COM port of 3 or higher (or 0). I'm baffled
  • I am also a little confused.

If you go to the diagnostic tab of the modem properties & hit the 'Query Modem' button, what kind of response do you get?

I get a bunch of parameters that are also written to the modem log file :-

  • OK, I have rooted around my loft and found an old serial modem, like yours a US robotics fax modem, from the diagnostics it looks like the same model but with slightly newer firmware.

The good news is I can recreate the problem - and I found a really horrible work round, which appears to work, and I think I can convert that to something that I can call from within my spreadsheet. To avoid hijacking this thread (any more than I already have) I am moving support and new versions to their own thread here:-

So can we continue our conversation there please

The same happened to me on Wednesday evening.

It was OK half an hour ago (Saturday), but I reset the time to last Wednesday! and it did the double calling again. I'm not sure if the call goes to the same number as I expect it to though, because if I by-pass the dialler "she" doesn't say "Welcome" - When it goes wrong all I hear is "Welcome" and the 2nd dialling string cuts the line off for some reason!!
( perhaps there wasn't an 08457****** option!! on that automated system only 1 to 9 lol)

(I'm on the Heinz program with 18185 and BT Evening and Weekends.)

I have got this a lot. It happens whenever the dialler is programmed for carrier 5 on the Heinz table. This is 18185 cable. I don't have cable and the people at orchid said that should not matter.....however if you reset carrier 5 to 18185 then it works.

I think you missed the explanation of why Speedee thought his Orchid was 'double dialling' (it wasn't):

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Hi Heinz

Your tables seem to relate mainly to BT but any suggestions to someone registered with Talktalk?

    Thanks Michael

ps I am very happy with Talktalk.

AIUI, Talk Talk bar prefixes (18185, 1899 etc.) but you may still be able to use their freephone gateway number (ostensibly provided for cable customers).

In fact, 18185's (08081703703) is Carrier No.5 in the Heinz Program (which I think is what you're referring to).

Certainly, the 10p/minute weekday and 4p/minute weekend rates offered by using 18185's freephone gateway are cheaper that the 11.74p/minute daytime and 6.85/minute evening prices offered by Talk Talk's non-inclusive call charges (although not, of course, weekday evenings).

Just started looking for a dialler, and have found the threads about the Orchid V4 just in time find the V4 support been taken away etc. etc.. my timings great:rolleyes:

Should I get a V4 (can you still get them), or is there another recommended alternative?

I found this site with a quick google http://www.callguard.co.uk/program.htm
Anyone have one of these (probably not in this V4 thread), any good and so on? Is the V4 better because it has more routing lines?

    Your thoughts are appreciated.:)
Because it's only half the calories, you can eat twice as much. :D
Because it's a bargain, you can buy twice as much.
Since starting saving money, I've spent way too much!!!
