  • Dear rc3675 and tiptoe_mouse (great name!!),

Very many thanks for your input - it makes eminent sense and I should have thought of it because the batteries date from 2004 and are probably less than fresh - even though they have not been used before. I recall having similar problems with 24v vehicles that used 4x6v batteries - constant charge problems and needing replacement.

The batteries concerned are indeed the sealed pack of 3xAAA with a wire connector rated at 3.6V and 700mAh. Interestingly, (and to my suprise) they are still widely available, so no soldering iron will be required.

If anyone else has had difficulty finding Ranger 400 batteries, see here - http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=700mah+batteries&!!!!!googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=17028991914&ref=pd_sl_zzl3k3bdk_b#/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=3.6v+700mah+batteries&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3A3.6v+700mah+batteries I hope that may be of help.

I have ordered 2 packs which I am told will be here around 19 Jan, so once I have charged them, I'll let you know whether that has solved the problem.

Once again, very many thanks for your help.

  • Oh well - further to my post above, it wasn't the batteries, it was the phone. Got the new batts, charged them, cleared and reprogrammed the Ranger, but the same problem exists and the Ranger is now destined for the bin!! Rather sad about that.

But thanks again for the thought on the batts - it was worth the try.

Hi Greenfly - I have an old Gotalk manual and the setup for an additional handset it totally different from the Ranger 400. Instructions as follows:

    - Hold down the base station PAGE button until it stops flashing - you now have 120 seconds to register.
    - Long press * - Key Lock should now be displayed.
    - Press 1 - Register? is displayed.
    - Long press # - Finding:1 is displayed.
    - Enter code 1590 followed by Select.
    - 3 seconds later you should hear a beep confirming registration.

    Hope that helps.

    Regards,

    Heidegeist
  • That's what I was after Heidegeist. I'll give it a try. Many thanks. Greenfly

Might be a bargain on eBay today (no, it's not me selling).

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Definite bargain - went for about £5 including postage.

At that price one long international phone call on Virgin and it would pay for itself!

Just for info I recently added a truecall call screener box to the same line as an orchid v4.

Putting the truecall after the orchid worked for everything, except for the weblink ( dialup ) updating of the truecall box.

Putting the orchid after the truecall did not work - I suspect that the truecall was unable to provide sufficient power to the orchid box.

So the solution for normal operation is to put the orchid first, then the truecall.
Leave automatic updates OFF on the truecall ( the default ) and I manually plug it directly into a doubler on the wall socket and perform a manual update at the week-end when I have free calls.
