I was connected wirelessly until I attempted post 65. I was trying to encrypt the router.
How far did you get in post 65? Do it from a wired connection. Start with a simple password that you can remember (and type in easily) on the router and laptop. Then change to a 63 character random one as advised.

    Presumably it still works wired.

To undo the changes, just untick the encryption setting on the router and click apply. A router reset will lose all your isp id/password settings.

PS. There is a backup settings option in the router config, which saves all the settings to a file, for easy undo's
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

It doesn't work wired. I cannot access the router. I am currently using an external broadband modem.

plug the router in with an ethernet cable,

    and start, run

    cmd

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

    http://192.168.0.1

nothing in post 65 would have stopped it working wired.

Tried what you suggested and the message I got this time was "No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connection while it has its media disconnected".

Did type in simple password that I can remember. The message I got for that was "The network "NETGEAR" requires a network key (also called a WEP key or WPA key). A network key helps prevent unknown intruders from connecting to this network.

Type the key, and then click Connect."

Seems to be trying to release/renew the wireless adapter, which won't work if the wireless adapter isn't enabled.

Try repairing the Local Area Connection (that's the wired connection). Similar to release/renew but does a bit more.

Thanks, will change from this modem to router again and let you know how I get on.

Disable wireless encryption on the router, then disconnect the Ethernet cable and see if you can connect wirelessly. If you can, enable encryption as per post 65. You could jump straight to the random 63 character key - save it in Notepad file so you can copy/paste it on the router screen and network key prompt.
