All the answers are in the two links I provided earlier.

So are you using a non windows utility to manage it.. Belkin/netgear etc??

Must be, e7even told me what settings to change about a year and a half ago.

I'd encrypt it as a starting point. If you don't understand how to do it, it can be done by remote control if you need help
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Will try this tommorrow as I am too tired now and going to go to bed for a few hours sleep. Does it take long?

2-3 minutes if you know what you are doing, possibly a lot longer if not.

The gist is, wire it up using an ethernet cable

    goto to http://192.168.0.1

    admin
    password

    wireless

    tick WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)

enter a password 8 characters or more into

    WPA-PSK Security Encryption
Network Key (8 ~ 63 characters) the longer the better.

click apply, that's your router secure.

    click logout

then when you connect to your router wirelessly, it will prompt for a password,, this can be set to automatically connect, instructions are in the links.. see the bit that starts "assuming that everything is working"

When you are comfortable with how you did it, then you can choose an ultra secure 63 character password from https://www.grc.com/passwords

You'll need XP SP2 to use wpa.

If you do go for a wireless router, steer clear from Linksys as I have had terrible experiences from them in the past, go for Buffalo as they are the best.
You can't con an honest man!

Are you now trying to connect wirelessly to the router?

If so, did you enable Wireless Access Point in router's wireless settings? If not, connect with Ethernet wire and tick that box. Allow tick Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID) - you can usually untick that when you have connected wirelessly.

I was connected wirelessly until I attempted post 65. I was trying to encrypt the router.
