THANKS, I thought that the CAT 6 cable would be a more modern version of the CAT 5.
It is, and they look the same and work the same. Just go for the required length or the cheapest £/metre.

I purchased an adapter on ebay last night but with it being a bank holiday weekend it might not be here unti next weekend. :j
I received the adapter and I installed the drivers for it on to the old computer. I then connected the old computer to the router and although the router port is flashing the old computer is not online and is not connected to the network.
What have I done wrong THIS TIME?

I know the answers are in this thread, but if you could answer the following, that will provide a quick summary and help us to help you!

What operating system is the old computer?

What's the make and model of the router?

What's the make and model of the adapter? Is it wireless or wired (Ethernet)? - the model should tell us this, but just to confirm.

Click Start - Run - type winipcfg - OK. Your USB LAN adapter should be listed in the drop down box. Select it and then click Release followed by Renew. Now see if you can surf the internet. If not, post the details shown on the winipcfg screen.

When a computer starts up how do you decide what she brings up and what she doesn't? Dads computer still brings up the dial up box.

The drop down box only brings up 1 thing, PPP Adapter, what does this mean?

Release and renew didn't do anything so I pressed release all and renew all, please don't tell me I have made a huge mistake.
