  • I can't understand why or believe there isn't an alternative "manual" method of checking the engine oil level!
Or is this yet another fine example of German "engineering"?

Lot of trucks like this now, electronic dipsticks that work intermittently, some have a dipstick under the cab and some don't, quite ridiculous in working vehicles.
It isn't just oil level, its condition and colour i want to judge too.

they used 7.8 litres of mobil1 (porsche approved). The manual specifies that amount

The boxter is no different to a vw or audi same sort of money and build. Its not a 911! Ive always taken it to specialists for servicing I realise kiwkfit are what they are but we are talking here about an oil change.. I was planning on doing it myself - it was the nearest place that didnt require it booking in advance

The topic has gone a bit off centre from what the issue is, a company selling a service and performing a task incorrectly that could have damaged a persons property...

"You do know how to read the manual I presume."

"^^ It's that time of year when lots of clueless people go out and buy soft top "sports-cars"

"What did you expect for "£45" a porche trained technician or a formula one pit stop crew "

"IMO you get all you deserve..."

Hi thanks for the replies, just to clarify there is isn't a dipstick in the 05 boxter.

Sometimes there is, for example if you let the Kwik-Fit fitter take it out for a test run after doing the oil change. :D

FWIW, I'm not totally convinced that mechanics not knowing where certain stuff is on a rare car means they're incompetent, it depends on what exactly they don't know.

I take my obscure Jap import to a local garage and depending on what job it is I have to tell them to use parts and values from a 1993 Nissan 200SX or to use parts and values from a 1993 Nissan Skyline GTS4, I'm ok with this as I don't expect them to have seen my car before and it certainly isn't in any English-language car data books. When I used to use a guy who specialised only in those two cars I didn't have to do this as he'd recognise most of them by eye.

That said, I wouldn't really consider a Boxster to be rare, though it's probably a rare car on Kwik-Fit forecourts, that information should be in whatever car database software they are using.

If the manual says 7.8 litres.......(does that 7.8l include a new filter being fitted?)........and they put in 7.8 litres....and you witnessed them putting in 7.8 litres.... then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

What you have here is maybe the 7.8 does not include the little bit extra needed when you change the filter -but I doubt that-.

    So either
    A) It is low by up to half a litre for the above reason
    B) It isn't low because they did put in 7.8 litres so you have either a faulty dipstick or it takes time to adjust itself before it starts to read that it's actually full.
    C) It is low because he counted wrongly and you did not watch him do it and count also, then it will only be low by a small amount and a top up will be all that is required

Either way, nothing to worry about, I very much doubt any damage will have been done.

Loads of porsche owners go kwik fit for oil as you can't even but 8 litres for 45 quid. im unsure if there is any damage but id like to know for peace of mind.

Is there any legal recourse if there is damage?

The reason you can't buy 8 litres of oil for a Porsche for £45 is because it uses very high grade fully synthetic stuff like all performance cars.

Which is exactly the kind of stuff you WILL NOT find at Kwik Fit. I actually don't even want to contemplate what oil they did put in.

My mate was a mechanic for a Porche main dealer, but quit after they had a shopfloor meeting and were told "the sort of people who buy these cars would not even know how to open the bonnet let alone check to see if we actually changed the oil. Therefore, the oil filter is to only be change every other main service.".
And you think Kwik-Fit are bad.

    Oil change...

Remove sump plug, draining oil. Once oil drained, put fresh oil (1ltr) into the engine waiting for it to come out of the sump plug. Once fresh oil coming out, fit new magnetic sump plug. Re-establish engine oil level. Provide a small bottle of the same engine oil, or replenish customers old oil bottle.

Thats how i would expect it to be done..

The original fill is Mobil-1 0w-40 - its about £56 retail for 10 Litres at Costco - QF bulk cost will be much less and they do use the proper oil though you can request others. Having said that any other brand to the same spec would be fine - most specialists Porsche grages don't actually use Mobil-1 as a standard refill.

I asked recently at a QF re. the oil they use and they said thay had to use the recommneded oil on their database - or an 'upgrade' one on a option list. I asked for a synthetic refill on a Ford and was told its not an option oil on the list - so no, as they have ben sued for filling with an unspecified oil before.

Main Porsch delaers often aren't that great - plety of idiots work in the attached garages. You are better off at a specialist that is recommended by enthusiasts

On the filter - a change is actually not on the schedule for every oil change but is for the major ones so please name that main dealer so it can be avoided!!

It's probably ok. Low oil means just that, it's low, and the first problem will be if you corner too fast and the oil sloshes away from the pickup in the sump, and the bearings briefly run dry. The car should tell you well before it goes that low. I'd expect at least a litre between high and low on the dipstick, then at least another litre before it was off the end. That would still be enough in the sump.
