Kwik Fit Misfilled my Car

I took my car to Kwikfit today to have an oil change. The guy didnt know how much oil to put in as it wasnt on there system so asked me if I knew (I didnt im not a mechanic) so he called another garage and they gave him a number which they filled the car too.

Then the guy asked me how to measure the oil level (as its done via the dash not a stick) again as he didnt know how, so I said id have a go at working it out. He then suggested that to save time I take it home and if it needed topping up to bring it back.

So I take the car home, read the handbook and take the measurement. Next thing I know the oil meter starts flashing below minimum. Further reading in the handbook says I should not drive the car and top it up immediately.... bit late after ive drove it 12 miles back from them.

It looks like I may have damaged the cars engine by driving it below the recommended oil range. I guess this is my fault for not checking the oil before leaving however im no mechanic however I would have expected them to at least check it..

Im wondering what my best recourse would be? For peace of mind id like the engine checked out and ideally for Kwik fit to foot the bill. Would that be possible as I didnt check the oil myself before taking it away?

1st thing to do is physically check the oil level
electronic oil checks are okay to a point.
the dipstick is the definitive check

Let's not panic - when you say it looks like the engine is damaged, what do you mean exactly? Is it still running as it should or has something gone wrong.

If the engine is still running correctly I'd suggest you'll probably be ok. Just get the oil back to the correct level ASAP and take it as a lesson learnt - never take your car to kwik fit!

I find it hilarious that the person who actually owns the car has a go at them when he himself doesn't even know where the dipstick is.
