I haven't trawled old posts, but personally I wouldn't do it. Mainly because i'm not convinced that 6 months on a cruise ship in the beauty industry would be any more benefical to a career than 6 more months on land.

I also percieve an onboard culture, that would not be suitable for a married man/woman. Perhaps I just have the same perceptions of cruise ships and holiday reps. Poor pay but great fun for singles.

Whilst I see others have justfied time away for military personel, that's a different senario for me, and could not be described as a 'jolly.'

And no, I wouldn't think any different if it were a man.

Thanks for the advice regarding reading threads before commenting, how far would you suggest I go back in time before commenting in the future?
I'd suggest you read the whole thread as I suspect there has never been a case of any thread anywhere online running to over 200 posts where the topic being discussed has not evolved significantly from the initial post. And it's pretty bad netiquette to assume otherwise.

The OP says she has had long discussions with her husband. I would think they are aware of all the advantages and disadvantages. It sounds as if they care equally for the children and have family support.
I think it would be easier to do now than when the children are teenagers with exams etc.
It is so much easier to stay in touch these days. I think children are resilient. Provided they know they are loved and provided they have regular email, Skype, phone contact, even letters/postcards they will be fine.

Thank you very much for your advice, Much welcomed :)

Is it ok that I have now read the whole thread, I did after my post and I would still of posted the exact same as I did as I was basing my answer based on the question asked in the first post? :)

I neither said stay or go. I was answering based on our experiences.

Is there a link on this forum to its "netiquette" so I don't get it wrong again?

  • why not ? thats probably the right question to ask. there will always be fors and against. but never live with regret....
your husband will do a fantastic job of looking after the kids and im sure you would all manage with being apart for 6 months.

i wish you all the luck in the world with what ever decision you make.

We'll never know if that's true or not will we, seeing as how that's not what you did in the first place?:)

I don't know, it's 2012, I'd have figured that what is and isn't rude to do online would be common knowledge by now.:)

wow this thread has exploded since I went to bed last night.

As I have said before on this post, I know the hours are 12 plus a day with hardly any time off, its not the life style I am going for or to escape anything.

I have researched this and spoken to lots of people who have done it.

If I could get the same job with out going I would, I have been looking.

It was my husband who encouraged me to apply to start with. He is also encouraging me to go back to universaty even though it will mean time away, I have surported him in his carea getting him to where he wanted to be and he wants to return the favour to me.
Shut up woman get on my horse!!!

I suggest you take out a full page ad to inform everyone then because this site has zillions of posts which start 'I haven't read the whole thread......'

I think 'netiquette' means different things to different people.

Not reading the whole thread wouldn't flash up on my radar for example whereas writing in capitals might. As might telling people what to do before they reply. :p:D <gentle banter not a serious dig.

I can't thank this post enough, and I WAS one of those crazy feminists!

Yeah, you and me both love. Got the sociology degree, read hundreds of feminist books, did the sociology feminism classes.... did it all!!!
Never burnt my bra though, love my big boobs now I've got the 2 sizes bigger bra from M & S!!!

It's funny when you slate feminism women turn into biatches! Yes, I'm all for equal rights/voting etc..... but 'equal but different'.

Oh, and to the person that said both the man and women had to work now due to high house prices/mortgages. I think you will find that feminism and the 2 salaries combined were a main factor in driving up house prices( along with a period of cheap money/speculation).

I'd do it but that's me....Everyone is different as the opinions on this thread have shown.
