So glad he is back home, I've been thinking about you both and I hope you get a better nights sleep tonight. The driving is a pain but him making a recovery is more important, maybe it'll stop him putting pressure on himself to do stuff for a while.

Hello Be Lucky, I've only just caught up with your recent posts. I am so sorry to read that what I was afraid of, did happen. But am also glad that the crisis has passed and you're all safely back at home now. Well done for making sure your DH got the help he needed.
When my son had a stroke, aged three, I read everything I could find - and understand - about brain function and dysfunction, in order to assist his recovery. I came to some conclusions that you may find comforting and useful:
The first thing to note is that a 'normal' person only uses about 30% of their brain. What the other 70% does is apparently a mystery. But in cases where a part of the brain is damaged, it often manages to re-wire itself with some of the 70% taking over the function that has been lost. During that re-wiring process, it's not uncommon for the patient to fit - one of DS' doctors explained it as like an electrical storm of impulses searching for a new correct destination. The good news is that as the pathways are established by repetition, the likelihood of fitting decreases. Medication is needed while the healing process is going on, because there is the possibility of further damage if the fits continue unchecked, but there is every hope that the brain will succeed in re-wiring itself in time.
What does seem to be important to encourage that process, is to practise problem solving.
My son was left with weakness on one side of his body, bad co-ordination and difficulty in understanding how things fit together. He was very young, so it was easy for me to guide him with activities to aid his recovery. We used lego, puzzles, and cookery mostly - but you and your DH will have to find more adult projects to work on (not sure what to suggest; maybe gardening or painting the house? Of course actively playing with children is very valuable).
Working together certainly helped my lad; I guess you'll need much more patience and sensitivity to deal with a grown man, who is understandably frustrated and depressed by his situation.
Maybe it would help to look at the next few months as a series of steps; get the medication level right, exercise the brain with interaction and problem solving, work on physical fitness too.
I found keeping a diary very useful, it also helped the doctors see what was happening between appointments which meant we got better guidance.
Obviously it would be far too dangerous for your DH to drive, especially as he's only just been put on epilepsy meds - the dosage will probably need adjusting to find the most effective level to control the fits, without unacceptable side-effects (like the possibility that he might fall asleep or fit at the wheel?).
So the sooner you can find something to distract him from thinking about driving, the better; it's just a whole ball of frustration and resentment your DH would be much better off without - sorry that must be obvious! If you're wracking your brains over it and your DH has no ideas, maybe talking it over with his Mum or someone else who knows you both well, may yield some suggestions.
(((Hugs))) and Good Luck - I will follow your progress.0 -
Hi, I've just read your diary and just wanted to wish you good luck - I can't imagine what it is like for you, but you are full of spirit and I admire you very much.

Hi all, sorry I've been MIA, things have been very hectic here. Thanks again for all your lovely messages. Robin you have given me some wonderful information thank you :A and I'm so sorry to hear about your son. How on earth do you cope when it's your little one?? I take my hat off to you. Welcome to GraceJamesMum, thanks for taking the time to read my diary.
DH hasn't had any further seizures thank goodness, but he hasn't been quite right either, like he hasn't been 'switched on' properly. He's extreemely tired and sore from the fits, I think he pulled some muscles etc during them. He's been quite drowsy from the antiepilepsy medicines and has gone from waking really early to sleeping in late and having extra naps too. He's been sent an appointment for an EEG the week after next which should give us a bit more insight, and we are still waiting for the MRI, although we effectively now know the answers they were looking for when it was requested. DVLA said no driving for 6 months but if he has another seizure it will be increased to 12 months without fits.
I'm shattered! I was at work last night and I'm back again today, though just 1-5pm. I've also mysteriously appeared on the rota for tomorrow afternoon although I didn't agree to it! Need to decide whether or not to do that as it's another day for MIL to have to look after DH and the boys. Losing my other job has suddenly gone from being a disaster to a godsend as I don't see how it would have worked with DH being as he is right now.
In other news I'm pregnant!! I've actually known about 10 days but I didn't want to say on here as I know of at least one family member who lurks on my diary and I wanted to tell them and some others first. I still want to tell a couple of close friends but I'm otherwise keeping quiet until 3 months. I think I'm about 5-6 weeks.Debts @ LBM £23,729.31. Debts @ 08/04/2016 £0 :j

Thank you! Of all the surprises we've had over the last 2 weeks, it's definitely the best one! Slight OMG  how will I cope but mostly I'm cautiously excited. Will feel better at 12 weeks as I'm very conscious of all the stress I'm under at the mo which can't be good. XxDebts @ LBM £23,729.31. Debts @ 08/04/2016 £0 :j
