  • Thank you for your post, I have taken on board some of the replies on this thread for my email to toys r us. Maybe not the best written email in the world but I think gets the message across.
Email to toys r us as follows:

    Hi,

I amemailing in relation to an accident involving my daughter, in your GloucesterToys r us store.

On Saturday7th April my daughter, who has just turned 10, decided she wanted tospend her birthday money in Toys r us.

We enteredthe store, and on turning the corner in the baby section, my daughter screamedout and was holding her leg.

She hadscraped a few layers of skin off her leg on a protruding metal rod sticking outfrom the bottom shelf, on further inspection, the metal grid seemed to havebeen damaged in the middle causing both sides to be sticking out, one side moreprominent than the other

My partner immediately went to find the manager to alert him toit.

The managerwas very helpful, made sure our daughter had a seat and instructed anothermember of staff to get an ice pack and something to put around it to preventand ice burn.

He then gotanother member of staff to assist us with the accident form

The managercame back, apologised to us and our daughter and gave her a £5 gift card.

My daughterwas upset and sobbing, but your staff were lovely and did all they could tomake her comfortable, and by the time my daughter was able to continue with hershopping, we noticed the broken piece had been removed.

I believethere is no-one to blame in this situation as the damage could have happened atany time, although I would like to question whether there is an alternative toa metal grid you could use on the front of the shelves, given the nature ofyour stores?

Although thewound was bruised on Sunday and quite sensitive, our daughter is now muchbetter and has got over the incident.

Please couldyou pass on my thanks to the manager and other members of staff that assistedus.

    Many thanks

Other than the lack of spaces where needed (might be due to copy-paste into the forum) that's a very good letter - it outlines the issue, what action was taken, your opinion of the staff and what you'd like to happen (alternative shelving). All without a Jerry Maguire "Show Me The Money" feeling. :)

I wouldn't be surprised if you got a return email/letter in acknowledgment that included a further voucher. :)
  • Sorry about the spacing issue, just checked the original and it doesn't have the same problem, didn't realise copy and paste could do that
    New lesson learnt, proof read
Many thanks for your input, can be quite critical of myself as I have a problem with explaining myself properly
  • BTW, I always add my address to emails
It is quite surprising what companies send when you compliment them ;)

Your sis in law should be ignored I fear...

My 14 year old DD fell down a rabbit hole on a night exercise with her Air Cadet Squadron back in September last year. On extracting herself from the hole she whacked her knee on a post. She was examined by the Squadron first aiders and again by our own GP (incidentally she also has mobility issues) who determined a sprain. When it was still swollen in October it was finally decided she needed an XRay and she had fractured it just below the kneecap.

Did we sue? Of course not! I spoke to her Sergeant who was mortified and told him that it was an accident, nothing more nothing less. First Aiders couldn't have known the knee was fractured, the Squadron couldn't have known the hole was there for her to fall down in the first place.

DD picked herself up and got on with it. Compensation never crossed anyones mind and that is how it should be. Kids have accidents, kids heal pretty quickly. Childhood bumps and scrapes are half the fun of growing up aren't they? Who else now, as adults, can look down at their knees with a smile and say "I got that scar when I fell from a wall on a summers day playing with Fred".
In 20 years time I fear there will be a whole generation of adults looking down at their knees and not fondly remembering scrapes but thinking "I got a grand for that!" and I find that really sad.
  • My poor brother run my leg over with an old rusty spin blade lawn mower thingy
My mum went crazy at him and I felt awful for him getting an earbashing, it was an accident, 30 years later I have a lovely 3 inch round scar, and he still feels bad about it
I remember being chuffed for having a week off school for it lol
Think my DD felt the same about her £5 giftcard

I too think it a well-phrased email. Especially like the 'suggestion' that they review what their shelving is made from.

One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.
