I've just checked back to this thread -never thought I'd generate so much debate!
Keep it up!0 -
Unfortunately every thread on cycling (and, to be fair, caravanners!) degenerates into a slanging match, so it's hardly surprising.Long-haul Supporters DFW 120

I decided to ignore this thread for that exact reason......
Has "road tax" been mentioned/argued yet? :rotfl:“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Of course it has. We all love a little pedantry regarding the existence of said tax, but there's no doulbt that motorists are 'saddled' <snigger> with huge levels of pigouvian taxes, and it doesn't surprise me that this generates self righteousness amongst many of them.
Hardly surprising when one group of people who see themselvs as Atlas carrying the weight of the world in tax and regulation come into contact with a holier than thou bunch of fit, healthy, happy Gaia botherers who they see as free-loading on 'their' roadsThe whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.0 -

In other words you can see both sides? :T:T:T:T:T
We have found one at last, knew there'd be one,
But you miss the !!!!!!! point that there are strugglin bikesters that aren't super fit, just super broke, and motorists too, in a similar situation.
All have a reason to get from a to b and at little cost, but preferrably ALIVE.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

I'm sorry these arguments don't work, you can't separate riders from drivers with statements like that. As said there are good, bad and indiffe3rent in each camp whether they have been on the road for 30 years or 30 minutes.
I'm not sure how your comment applies to my post?
Far from trying to separate cyclists from vehicle drivers, I wasn't even including cyclists in my observations above.
However, I am basing those comments on the fact that, to drive motorised vehicle one needs to hold a licence.
And there are certain duties and responsibilities attached to holding that licence.
Duties and responsibilities that too many pay mere lip service to.
I cannot include cyclists in this group, as cyclists don't have such a legal requirement to uphold,[ aside from that required of any road user....regardless of how they are using the public highway.]
From the tone of your replies to my posts, I get the impression you consider me to be 'anti-cyclist?'
Although that impression is [or may be] quite a long way from reality, I can be persuaded to become anti-cyclist quite easily. No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -
But this post IS about cyclists, .And because you said holders of a licence, ie drivers, that does differentiateI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Of course it does.
That was the intention!
The post was in response to another, regarding drivers and courtesy....and how that misplaced courtesy affected [as it happened] a cyclist!
However, this thread has developed, as all threads should do.
Whilst it is primarily a topic on cyclists....it very quickly developed into the problems faced by cyclists...[and , of course, other road users,] on the public highway.
Since it would be unfair and unbalanced to solely pay regard to the views of cyclists, the views of other road users, especially motor vehicle drivers , need to be included.
I post from the viewpoint of correcting misconceptions of , for example, the Highway Code.
Amongst other things.
All very much 'on topic', IMHONo, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -
Not your posts in particular chap, but this thread seems to have polarised 2 wheels and 4 wheels, even those who drive/ride both have voted 1 way or the other.
I merely took your comment about poor drivers with 30 years experience to be sugestive of cyclists being better mannered or behaved in someway, as I think we both agree it's not black or whiteI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

I refer back to my 'chicken-and-egg' post?
We have arrived at a point where conflict has gone so far down the line, that reconciliation amongst road users seems a pipe dream.
But cycling isn't the only 'us-&-them' situation on the roads....
Bikers [with motors] and cars, for example?
Or, lorries and everyone else?
Caravanners and others?
Polarisation is rife?
Sadly for me, part of my job involves making some folk aware that the public road is open to everyone....and thus attitude must be adjusted...[or they spend longer in the care of my colleagues than they might wish?]No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0
