I would worry about the long term health implications of using something like this. I can understand the not wanting periods every month, who does!!! ... but to my mind it's messing with what Mother Nature intended, and surely that's not a good thing

All birth control is messing with what Mother Nature intended though, I guess?

One good point that was made to me was that women aren't "supposed" to have periods every month. Nature designs us that way so we know when we can get pregnant, but in fact, the woman's body is designed to bear children repeatedly...and in the past, many women were pregnant most of their adult lives. Then died (how nice to have been our ancestors!!)

I was on the depo for ten years, and I asked several nurses about whether it would be good for my body to have a break from it. None of them seemed to think so. I came to the conclusion, though, that the long term effects weren't known (though they do think it definitely affects your bone density, which only repairs once you come off it) that it was pointless limiting my intake of chemical in the home and in my diet, and to continue to have something man made just to stop my periods!

I stopped the injection at the start of the year. I actually feel a lot more alert for it, my sex drive is better than it was, and I am totally shocked to find myself quite okay with having periods again after all these years. I really dreaded it, but - funny thing - now it just makes me feel even more oldstyle!! I am sure one day I'll end up with the mooncup!

Relevant plug alert (oh dear, unfortunate choice of words there :o ) - the latest article on the home page of Downsizer.net is about making your own washable pads, with patterns and instructions for using - and some nice design ideas involving leopard print fleece ...

I can recommend Peeweez. (You need to click on the 'choose' menu on the left and choose menstrual pads from the drop down menu.

We have been brought up with so many disposable things that many of us forget that the idea of disposable items being anything more than something you have to buy and then throw away seems to have been lost somewhere along the line.

With very effective washing machines and powers, I can't see any reason why washable pads should be seen as anything more than an obvious choice, especially if you have used washable nappies with your children. I bought mine when my son was in washable nappies. I've not bought disposable ones since and hope I never will. (Oh, except on holiday!) I have 12 for those considering it.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

It was when I started to use washable nappies and wipes and breastpads with my ds1 (now nearly six) that i realised what an idiot i'd been to have not been using washable pads etc. for me!

So i got a mooncup (now on sale in boots I head! wow!) from the states and made myself lots of pads and never bought sanitary products again! :D down with marketing - down with making women ashamed of their periods! ha ha

I even suggested to dp that we should use washable wipes instead of toilet paper but i haven't quite won that argument yet...

    i'm loving this board!

I have to admit i'm tempted to get one (i've been hearing about them for years), so have started checking out prices when i noticed this http://www.mooncup.co.uk/special.html

My MSE instincts are telling me to get the 'buy 2, get 1 free' deal but as they last for years i wouldn't be buying them for me but can't really imagine giving them as a birthday pressie to even my best friend! And can you imagine finding a mooncup in your stocking at christmas?

    Made me giggle.

    PS will just buy one!

well not trying to question the size of the stick, or the volume of the bucket, but i cant believe there is room to have sex, when wearing the mooncup - as it only just sits inside, and if it got pushed up deeper, would be harder to remove, and the stem must hurt, surely?

Perhaps we could get together and split the cost. I'm keen to get one, but worry if I don't get on with it. Let me know!

I didn't fancy the idea of the mooncup as I dont get on with tampons either, but I recently bought some really snazzy san pro from wee notions, really jazzy materials, to brighten up any day and saving a fortune, they are called fairy hammocks - not sure on the name.
    Starting with a clean slate.
