    Hi Loubie,

We hired a car from Hertz when we came over to the UK for a visit. At the time of collecting the vehicle they tried to charge us more than the price that was agreed at the time of booking the rental. Fortunately hubby had printed off the confirmation so he was able to prove the price. They changed the price then asked us if we wanted to put the petrol in the car or let them do it when we dropped the car off. We initally said we'd let them do it but then as they were processing the bill they put the petrol amount through, and then charged VAT on top of the petrol in effect charging VAT on top of VAT, so we changed it and said we'd put the petrol in.

Basically, my advice would be get everything in writing, fill the car yourself on return and keep all receipts.

As to the pre-auth, most hotels over here put a pre-auth on the card in case of any incidentals (damages etc), as far as the car hire goes I wouldn't worry too much about it, just make sure when you pick up the vehicle and take it back that you and the dealer agree on what marks/scratches/dents are on the vehicle.

You could even take photos of the car on your phone when you collect it and before you hand it back if it would put your mind at ease.

Thanks guys for helping to put my mind at rest! I am reading so many bad things about this company now (doh)

I need you guys to tell me whether I am nuts or not...(wait until I explain Jakes-mum!!!:rotfl:)

Soooooooooooooo.... I'm thinking of doing 2013kms in 2013 using only human power (so running, cycling, rowing and walking). This is 38.7kms per week (or just over 24miles per week) My friend has just asked if I want to get a mountain bike and we'll go out together as we can rack up a lot of miles on a bike as opposed to running/walking. I'd need to cap the number of kms on the bike though as, at an average beginners speed of 12mph, then I will hit my weekly target in just 2 hours and I want it to be a challenge!

What do you guys think? Am I just nuts or do you think it's a good challenge??? xxx

We have something similar at our karate club and at the minute its time stopping me.

This is the post the female instructor put on "5 mile , 1,200 kicks , 1,200 punches, 750 press ups, 35 kata, 2 combat rounds This every day for the next week or so just so I can rest for a week after Ava' s birth"

Plus read 5 books including the art of war and two others I can't remember other two are your own choice. Resit two black belt exams and do empathy days. Which include being blind for a day being disabled.

The above post comes from a woman who is 7 months pregnant at this point! So in that respect you are perfectly sane!

Has anyone rented a car recently for a non business trip? Have you had to pay any extras when you got to the depot that you did not know about?

I pre booked one to pick up Thursday and i've only just read the small print (silly me) and all I can see is taking deposits of several hundred pounds on a credit card in my name, non of which I have! I rang them up today just to be on the safe side and all they are going to do is pre authorise my debit card with some fuel deposit in case i dont fill up the car on my return.

    Doesn't stop me worrying though!

I've had a few for personal or booked for work and I paid. No problems really. Make sure you go over the car when you hand it back and walk round doing a check before and after leaving it.

Have decided to start declaring one of my CCs but will have to find out how much I've paid on it since started this.

I've also decided try payment a week by rounding down the bank account to nearest £5, but only started this last week so will see how it goes.

Just realised that with my overpayments to the CC it hasn't taken the DD and I've been keeping back the money for it. I've just made a payment for that and a zapper cheque I paid in yesterday so another £150 spare in the bank. Unfortunately it has added £50 interest
I could try a balance transfer but I want this shifted in a few months and so the interest is instead of transfer fees. £5797 left on this CC now  Might have to chivvy the tax man along today :D Anyway the next payment is £100...

Got into a bit of trouble over the weekend. I got so over excited and carried away with extreme couponing that I spent £120 at the supermarkets. At MrTs I spent £56 but on the plus side I did save £36 and it was mostly on washing powder and kitchen cleaning stuff so I have a small stockpile now. But it means I only have £27.45 to last until pay day, which is next Friday.

Got plenty of food in so that shouldn't be a problem but DH does spend around £7.50 per day on cigarettes, what can I do???
