Has anyone rented a car recently for a non business trip? Have you had to pay any extras when you got to the depot that you did not know about?

I pre booked one to pick up Thursday and i've only just read the small print (silly me) and all I can see is taking deposits of several hundred pounds on a credit card in my name, non of which I have! I rang them up today just to be on the safe side and all they are going to do is pre authorise my debit card with some fuel deposit in case i dont fill up the car on my return.

    Doesn't stop me worrying though!

    Hi loubie,

I rented a van a while ago for a house move, and every time over the past few years they've done something similar. It is worth noting that you will need to have around the amount they're looking to authorise available in your account, otherwise it will be declined.

Basically, the reason that they do it this way is that they don't have to take the transaction afterwards making it more difficult to dispute if you do damage the car.

In four rentals I've never actually been charged above what was actually agreed, though I did get talked into an extra tenner for excess insurance once.

I tend to pay the insurance waiver... purely because if I did happen to crash or something happened, I couldn't afford to pay for the repairs or normal insurance excess. But no, I haven't generally been charged anything extra.

You got me worried now superheavy as I don't have what they are asking for in my account. They said as I was hiring a small car I will not have to pre authorise these costs apart from a petrol charge. So I am worried now....

You know how people can say one thing on the phone and it's different in person. I'd like anybody else's experiences please?

Usually a fiver or so. Not sure about the pre-authorisation though. Who did you book it through?

I've had a look and I'm not sure... maybe it's worth calling them to double check?

I think I usually use thr!fty and I think they would invoice you for damages, or tell you at the time how much they are charging for petrol and take it later. I've never been charged something I haven't been told about or had to pay extra than what I agreed.

Get their name and say that you will be naming them if anything is charged for that you weren't told about. I'm sure you will be fine, but it's worth calling for your own peace of mind.
