  • Update..... She now wants to dress up as The Cat in The Hat. So black leggings, black top with white fur sewn on front, A long tail and a red bow. Thats the easy bit.

Anyone any idea where I can get a hat (dead cheap) or how to make one?

Thanks for all your ideas :)
  • I am going to jump in on this thread if possible - my son who is 8yrs also has to dress up as a book character on 7th March... last year he went as Julian from famous five which was easy peasy but this year he says he doesnt have a CLUE  HELP!! Ideas people... i cannot sew well though i could rope my mum in perhaps for simple stuff lol and must be money saving lol as i am BROKE!
Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?

    Welcome!!

Harry Potter? My friend recycled a vampire cape from halloween when she dressed her son up last year.

Robin Hood ... Green clothes and a bow and arrow and hat with a feather.

A pirate ? Stripey top, eye patch, bandana and trousers cut in zigzags at the bottom.

I am trying not to get too stressed about it, but some of the mums are so competative where I am.

I did (joys of being the teacher and having to do this stuff too) one of the cards from Alice in Wonderland one year... sandwich board of card and I just drew a playing card on it. Might have been the Queen of Hearts I actually did because I vaguely remember shouting "off with his head" a lot that day (and I don't think the kids were behaving THAT badly!)

Not very impressed by the ideas on WBD site http://www.worldbookday.com/showcaseitem/childrens-fancy-dress-costumes-ideas-for-world-book-day-2013/

Wrinkled clothes, some back to front = Oliver Twist
James Bond (add glasses = The Cool Boffin)
    Dracula
    Cinderella (before)
White rabbit (Alice in Wonderland) £1 ears and a white jumper
Julius Caesar - sheet toga (T shirt & shorts underneath)

Lots of ideas on Martha Stewart's site: http://www.marthastewart.com/search/apachesolr_search/costume%20party
I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.

you can make top hats from stiff paper easily (I'm not an arty person at all and I can manage it).

I was on another forum whinging about this. I have twins and wanted them to go as thing one and thing 2 but cant find red joggers cheap enough.
I am going to buy 2 value pillow cases and use them as playing cards for alice or knight's tunics. They need to bring the book and be familiar with the story too so that may cause problems.........
  • My daughter dressed up as a house elf Winky (a character from Harry Potter book; was not mentioned in movie though) and her friend as a house elf Dobby. I used an old pillow case and wrapped the top corners with rubber bands (above shoulders) and made holes underneath for arms. The girls wore white leggins and tops. No money was spent.:T
  • My daughter wants to go with the cat in the hat too! I found lots of ideas for the hat on pinterest.
