  • I guess any character really,

Shakespeare, (A beard and some stripey Pj's pulled in at the bottom)
captain hook & peter pan, james bond, cat in the hat,

i spose anything from a roald dahl book - eg the wolf, willy wonka, a witch. They could be the BFG and carry around a small plastic figure of a little girl. lol

Or narnia - a lion. Harry potter would be fairly easy too.

    hope that sprigs some ideas!

  • Think along the lines of books that have been turned into a film.
What about a pirate (from peter pan) eyepatch and hat from most party shops & supermarkets really cheap or a lost boy....go to school in PJ's with top hat & umbrella.

Harry potter - school uniform with a cape and broom (some round rimmed glasses) and draw a scar on their head with eyeliner.

Do you still have any halloween costumes in the wardrobe? What about the little vampire books or dracula was a book character? or the twilight phenomenon. Talc up the kids and re-use those vampire outfits.

Phantom of the opera (school shirt & trousers with a little elastic bow tie if you can get one from a joke shop) and paper mache or plastic half mask - again they're only £1 or 2 from a fancy dress or joke shop.

What about robinson crusoe? make them look all beardy with some eyepencil or other makeup, ruffle up their hair and if they have any old holiday clothes....shorts or short-sleeved shirts that you can put holes in or fray the seams....then if you want, one of those flower garlands from the joke/fancy dress shops or even poundland. If you wanted to do it in the style of tom hanks in "castaway" you could even draw a little face on a football!

Frankenstein? Green face paint, tin foil "bolts" put on a bit of clear or thin elastic to be worn round the neck. Use an eyeliner or kids washable marker to draw scars along the top of their head, and dig out your shoulder pads for under one of their old t-shirts or inserts from padded bra. Some 3/4 cargo type shorts and black school shoes.

What about superheroes - if you already have any of those costumes you could recycle those after all comics are sometimes made into graphic novels which you might be able to get away with as a book.

The mad hatter from alice in wonderland?
Willy wonka or an oompa lumpa from charlie & the chocolate factory?

Have you got an alien outfit? As there's a brilliant book called aliens love underpants.

A caterpillar - wear all green with some of those deely boppers on a headband and be the hungry caterpillar.

Do you know anyone who does facepainting - can they do tiger stripes? You could get a yellow or orange t-shirt and a black fabric pen (or some strips of black fuzzy felt from a habedashery store) and draw some tiger stripes on the t-shirt. you could stuff an old (pref yellow or orange) sock as the tail and do the same with that. For trousers your best bet is probably some animal print PJs.
  • I would go and browse your charity shops, you will be amzed what you can find and simply transform.

Also ask the children about there favourite book, then go from there!

My daughter was Boo from Monsters inc and also another year she was Matilda complete with pull along wooden cart!

Hopefully it is half term and so they can go and find treasure with you!

I need a queen costume for DD aged 10, something that would pass for King Arthur's wife Guinivere. There are some on ebay etc, is there shops that sell these costumes so she could try it on?

    Help!

My 6yo and his friend are going as Batman and Robin...should be pretty easy to make. Thing One and Thing Two was another idea. ooh, and Dorothy from Wizard of Oz was a thought for my 4yo daughter :D
“Listen earnestly to anything your children want to tell you, no matter what. If you don't listen eagerly to the little stuff when they are little, they won't tell you the big stuff when they are big, because to them all of it has always been big stuff.”
  • my lo was the only one in his class who wouldn't dress up he isn't into it at all so i don't buy any outfits but home bargains had a mr bump outfit for £2.99 so i got that and he said he will wear it.

We have been told by my son's school that children have to dress up as Wally from Where's Wally - eeekkk! I have been on ebay this week and ordered a wooly hat and plastic glasses like Wally wears and someone is selling iron on Wally transfers and I'm going to attach this to a plain t-shirt rather than giving myself the stress of trying to find a red/white stripy top ;) Wally wears blue trousers so I think jeans will do. So not exactly money saving, more like money spending but hopefully I've spent as little as I could whilst still pulling together something ok for him to wear.

Good luck with your costumes everyone :)
