That is so true - the amount of judging you get everyone assumes if you have credit cards you had a million foreign holidays and designer clothes. Sometimes there are large stories behind our debts and with all the adverts these days for credit it is so easy to let things get out of hand.

No-One knows about my debts except the people on this site, I couldn't tell any of my family they just wouldn't understand how I could have allowed this to happen, but they don't live my life and I could never make them understand, Im so grateful for this site and especially all the amazing people in the DMP support thread!

OH is the only one that knows about mine. My family would not understand. This site has been brilliant with all the advice (and recipes) ;)

  • Hi, im totally new to this site but desperately need some support. my husband and iare 32 grand in debt and are in process of setting up DMP with payplan. problem is i dont even know how to explain to creditors how we got in this mess. its basically just not budgeting and living beyond our means. I am so ashamed of myself. We have two sons and i am 6 months pregnant with my third (unplanned) child. I cant sleep or eat properly and my blood pressure is going through the roof. Need to earn more but just dont know how. Its a living hell which we have created. I cant tell my family cos they would be so disappointed with me and feel a total failure as a mother cos i got us into this situation. Dreading the phonecalls and letters, dont know how i will cope. my due date is in 13 wks and i just hope to god the DMP is set up by then. Anyone got any ideas how i cope with this situation? Thanks for listening to me.

I put in my DMP (I did it myself I went through the National Debt Helpline) that we had a new baby and I had to drop from 3 to one jobs. In all the correspondance I have received no one has ever questioned the income. Sometimes they sent there own budget sheets and I would just reply with the one I did with NDH.

I have to be honest we started in June last year and it took right up to January for the last one to agree. But do not panic at this my largest debts were amongst the first to go for it, and that put my mind at rest because I then could say well x has accepted and we owe them more.

Also that last one to accept I complained they had dragged there feet on purpose to extort extra interest out of me and got a £200 credit back as unfair interest charges!

Change your phone number and you dont accept the calls - BT was free and it is better to do all correspondance by letter you can prove to them that they said this and that.

Good luck you don't need the stress at the moment and definately don't worry about what famalies say - it can happen to anyone and creeps up on you!
  • hi all you new ones and the oldies like me.
teecee,....glad someone else is feeling the same as me.just one of those days.
rayday2....hi.its true about what people spend.i owe around £21000 and cant see where its gone and what ive got to show for it, except loads of interest as i was always one of the peeps who paid the lowest minimum payment on everything then consolidated but never paid the original loan off and it went from there......
am with cccs, who i would recommend to any newbies.you can take a look at their website, which is good.also payplan and national debtline.
dont be afraid to ask about anything or vent your feelings if its a bad day bcos everything will get better.
the main thing is you have faced your fear and you are dealing with it,so it will not get any worse.together we will tackle anything these creditors can throw at us. regards.xx
People bring great joy into our lives..some by arriving, others by leaving.im trying to be one of the former, so please bear with :)
