For efficiencies/economies/productivity.... read- cut wages, lengthen working hours with no reward

Read declining nationalised industries that have to live in the real world. This country is basically bust and living well beyond its means, and cannot afford to pay for inefficiencies and low productivity.

Technology will introduce efficiencies, however inevitably it will also impact jobs.

And anyway, why should the public sector be immune from cut wages, pay freezes, redundancies? Should the government cut services/benefits/jobs or raise taxes, and if so, raise taxes on whom?

    A sorting office.

But theres no reason why the guy who delivers needs to work for the same people who sort.

Similarly, theres no reason why the guys who move mail in bulk around the country need to work for the same people who sort or deliver.

And theres also no reason why the guys who pick up mail from the postbox need to work for yada yada yada......

so you pay people to sort the mail, then another to deliver?
    so wheres the saving?

The milkie is going down that road already so can do it for less.

Same with moving mail in bulk around the country.....maybe Virgin Trains could move post from London to Manchester or Scotland, as theyve got 40 trains a day going there anyway. Or Tescos......half their wagons do the return journey from stores empty so why not load up with the post.

And Im sure theres loads of local businesses who would be happy to bid for emptying post boxes once or twice a day as theyre already in that area.

    See the savings......

going down the road, yes. however they are now going to nearly every door.are you imagining they will take an extra couple of minutes here?

I sure in a with freight its fine. however meeting connections etc is a different matter.

I have said previously collections, logistics and mail centres will be sold off. so im not sure why you are proposing options. (perhaps in one of the other multitudes of threads)
delivery is a different matter. the idea of simply chucking on a mik float is lovely and simple. however you realise they would be taking on extra staff/vehicles?
    where would undelivered items go?
how would you cover areas that are less profitable?large rural routes etc?

This country works on channel the wealth to the very top and then rely on trickle down so people don't starve.
"Technology will introduce efficiencies, however inevitably it will also impact jobs." When technologies can supply the service to the elite with no human input then the population of the world will be culled.
But in the mean time lets defend the elites because we are conditioned to think that one day will be my turn to live a life where I can simple take wealth with the press of a keyboard key or the stroke of a pen, STOCKHOLM SYNDROME

Sending mail on trains!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now why didn't anyone else think of that? Hang on, something rings a distant bell. Wasn't there a film called the Great Train Robbery? Fact or fiction?
How about paper boys delivering the mail? Stick your £2500 special delivery in a paper bag and off you go. The possibilities are endless. Take away Pizza boys on scooters, get your mail at midnight with a meal thrown in.
Jehovah's Witnesses - they would become a welcome sight on your front path. Surely the security of the post is totally overhyped?

    .

I actually have a DVD that includes the famous short film called 'The Night Mail' .

I know I am old when new ideas were actually what happened when I was younger.

Also, in rural communities it wasn't the milkman carrying the post, it was the other way round. The only guaranteed service was the post, so the post van would also have extra seats in the back to act as a bus service, and also carry small amounts of groceries.-

As someone who lives centrally I do have milkman, paperboys and delivery people up and down the road all day. For those in rural areas it is often only the post that they ever see, so I wouldn't want to think that rural communities were completely cut off from the postal service.

Did I mention the airmail prices, my packets to France are going up - stamps for a 210g packets are going up to £3.39 - franking £3.13 - current price franking £2.22. Basically I'm pulling all my services to France. Someone needs to get Martin onto this!

Royal Mail with these new prices may as well have released a statement: "over the years, letters have dropped by 25% and have been replaced by small packets - BUT WE DON'T WANT THEM"

I currently charge the exact stamp price on my items. Everything I sell (clothes) will now fall in the £2.70 bracket. I have decided to up my postage to £2.49 on everything and absorb the extra 21p into my BIN price.
