    so this competition
how exactly do they reduce the cost?
    how are they being paid?
you undersatand the logistics of delivering the mail?
so they collect mail in what form?
for an entire postcode, street or what?
    who sorts it?

Not my specialist subject Im afraid. But as an example, where theres a milkman doing a round, let him also deliver the mail as he's going down the road anyway.....and in a van. He would be able to bid less for the round than the RM currently pay for a dedicated postie as his overheads are already covered.

Or these people that deliver junk mail every day, let them bid for a round as someone is already paying them to walk down the drive of every house my road.

how does that mail get to him though?
who is sorting that mail, ready for delivery?
what about areas not covered, mail security, undelivered items etc?
Its a bit simplistic to say someone can do a mail delivery alongside doing a milk round

A few episodes of Dragons Den, and the whole population are business experts. It's too ridiculous for words. Milkmen no less.

because the milk man doesn't have the network behind him, however you may be on to something there, if someone like TNT with their existing framework teamed up with someone like milk & more, that could theoretically work, however milkmen do cover the entire UK any more :(

For efficiencies/economies/productivity.... read- cut wages, lengthen working hours with no reward. If this tightening on the workers is imposed cue a bonus for the exec who implements the policy.Gain betterment by treading on your fellow man, life is sweet and the world is enlightened, yeah right!

My neighbour still uses a milkman with an old fashioned float. The depot is about 2 miles away- so I assume it would work if anyone between us and the depot wanted to send a letter- but not otherwise.

Also, they now deliver other goods already like tea bags , cat food and bread- but they charge an arm and a leg for the 'convenience' At their prices a first class letter carried 2 miles is likely to cost well over a pound.

No milkmen round here, that's for sure!

I must admit, the thought of mail on an electric float did make me smile though :D

    A sorting office.

But theres no reason why the guy who delivers needs to work for the same people who sort.

Similarly, theres no reason why the guys who move mail in bulk around the country need to work for the same people who sort or deliver.

And theres also no reason why the guys who pick up mail from the postbox need to work for yada yada yada......
