I think that people are letting the man who is responsible for a significant part of this increase to get off scot-free. That man is Mr George Osbourne. This millionaire, who has probably never operated a petrol pump in his life, keeps piling on the duty to already rip-off prices. When I worked for Royal Mail, the trucks didn't run on magic pixie dust, and I doubt that they do now.

I have too much time on my hands and too much excel knowledge, so here is a list of the best savings for packets

    Up to 749 g

    First Class at £2.70

    Use 5 x 2nd class stamps (50p) plus 20 p worth of stamps = £2.70 (save 70p)

    Second Class at £2.20

    Use 2 x 2nd class stamps (50p) plus 2 1st class stamps (60p) = £2.20 (save 56p)

Other combinations have the same saving

    750 - 999 g

    First Class at £4.30

    Use 5 x 2nd class stamps (50p) plus 3 1st class stamps (60p) = £4.30 (save 112p)

    Second Class at £3.50

    Use 7 x 2nd class stamps (50p) = £3.50 (save 98p)

NB. I have assumed folk buy their stamps at today’s prices and make sure they get the ones with 1st or 2nd written on and NOT the ones with a price shown.

And lastly, for a standard parcel, up to 2000g at £5.30

    Use 10 x 2nd class stamps (50p) plus 30 p worth of stamps = £5.30 (save 140p)

    and again
    whats your answer?
they are still expected to provide a set price national 6 day service
there are 2 million more addresses since 2003
they have lost millions due to down stream access
so where do you fund it?

like they havnt made enough cut's already to fund this excess? I've noticed a steady decline in service for the last couple of years yet each year they increase cost's? Hard to keep 'understanding' why they need the increases when you cant see where the money is going.
get rid of Saturday posting if its that much of an issue, am sure many others here would rather lose that one day than incur postage hike of this magnitude
PLUS there's not justification on the abolishment of the lighter weight bands. By having a flat rate 0-750g band is unfair and does not spread the cost increase fairly at all and THAT'S my biggest gripe. RM are essentially freezing out a LOT of their low end customer base with this, at the cost of only easing the increase on the few customers who sit on the higher end of that band.

furthermore - are you saying your happy for the increase? or are you not affected on the same level as some of the rest of us?

I can't double check as the RM link to the new prices is temporarily unavailable, but hasn't the packet 500-750 g reduced in price as it now comes into the big rate band? I think that will help people who sell slightly heavier items.

whilst at the same time shafting anyone selling items in the lighter side of the scale

    urgh.
you know, I can understand a slight increase each year (I swear this is the biggest hike of the last few years too) but this 0-750g band is not only a stupid idea, its disgusting and unfair.

None - there is no where else to got for small items.

0-500g i could have just about accepted, but up to 750g? Thats ridiculous.

so those affected would go nowhere - ie quit which myself and others (ie Shiole as mentioned in their post) will possibly end up doing if ebay / amazon dont increase their postage cap's :(

I don't think you will find any posts defending it,however can you defend losing £2 million a week in the letters division?

what about the increase postage times - its a rarity to get a 1st class item next day where as that USED to be common practice.
The shorter PO opening times as well as location closures.
Also, the increase in missing or delayed items - took almost 3 weeks for a 1st class tracked item to arrive and despite RM's 1-3 days ETA, they refuse to look into it until after 15 working days.
Then the late in the day post which we've had to adjust too (which I believe is due to loss of staff but I may be wrong) - I used to get post before work, in the morning, everyday about 5yrs back, now we're luck to get it by 4pm in the day meaning pretty much all personal business must wait until the next day to be dealt with
(sure this last one is more a personal complain but its still an area in which RM have declined in service. I'm sure many of us preferred getting post and then getting ready to go about their day)

as for abolishing saturday - it was a suggestion that I'm sure would be the lesser evil for the majority. I certainly have my love for sat-del's (pre-order's can sometime arrive sat i.e. 2 days early) but considering its hit and miss if we even get a sat-del, it would hardly be a big loss.

glad we agree on something :)

I'm pretty sure this years increase has been the worst in recent memory. Though increasing prices isnt always the answer. I know I'd opt for upgraded shipping options more often if the base cost was cheaper. ALL items would be sent trackable and 1st instead of most going 2nd class standard. I'd use airmail with tracking more than the cheapest i'national shipping option...I'm sure I'm not the only one.
RM need to increase the higher end products not the lower more commonly used services. I would much rather pay double, eg £10 for SD than have to pay double on the smaller items. It'll get to the point where only businesses ship smaller items meaning less off them in the postal system, meaning less sales overall in this area

RM still meet the 1st class target of over 90% next day delivey(think its 93%)
times are changing, folks need to deal with it
    early deliveries,two deliveries etc
not gonna happen, never gonna return(without cost)
£10 for SD. so what do you think the likes of Amazon would do on that pricing?

Haven't seen any discussions on here regarding the changes to compensation which have been included in the tariff changes. The main changes, as far as I can see, are as follows:

Currently the compensation arrangements for loss and damage of untracked stamp, meter and account universal services are linked to the price of a stamp (100 x the price of a First Class stamp). From 30th April, the maximum compensation available will remain at £46 where evidence of posting and value can be provided.

Additionally from 30th April the option of buying enhanced compensation from Standard Parcels will be removed - this is an untracked parcels service and the compensation arrangements will remain at a maximum of £46 where evidence of posting and value can be provided.
