New PC time.......again.

PhoenixBios mean anything to you?
I had a good clean inside the PC when it was open and it's not making the same loud noise it was before, which is a good thing.0 -
Yay! Now the Router won't work. The manual says this and that should happen and it doesn't. Asking someone like me to sort stuff like this out.....nah! Already wasted a few hours and totally about something I was meant to do so i'm not in more than one persons good books now.
She can stick her video watching up her...:)
I've managed to get it all back connected again as it was. The worst thing is the RAM is under the CD drive which is secured in a few places unlike my last PC which had RAM slots in the open. I look forward to it and if that doesn't work, it's a new PC.
Thanks anyway everyone.
The Graphics Card will be returnable for a refund if necessary(though I think that you won't need to do so), though you might have to pay the return postage.
Which BIOS version is installed on the PC?
What do you mean by 'the monitor doesn't load'? Did you plug the monitor into the new graphics card's port?
The reason for this not appearing to work is that you need to change a setting in the BIOS; under Boot Options. From Primary Display PCI to PEG (PCI Express Graphics)
Then when you reboot and having plugged the monitor into the new port, it should work.
Slot is the black one in the top left hand corner of this diagram, labelled PCIe x16:0 -

Router may be more complicated.
Are you that you have connected everything that needs to be?0 -

The beeps I get are 4-2-3-3 which is apparently extendde block move?
I don't want to do anything I cannot undo.0 -

You can wait until you get the new RAM and then try again. If still no go, raise a ticket for an RMA(return) from eBuyer, explaining the problem.
In this case, it may be better to get an older, less capable card; which will still be more than adequate. Such as the Nvidia G210.0 -

I know someone who needs a new graphics card and they have a better PSU than me. Could that have been the issue? At only 250w and the box on graphics card recommends 400w.
Will that graphics card you recommend work ok with a 250w PSU? Is it easy to fit like the previous one and with no to change the BIOS?
Thanks.0 -

NoNot sure at all.
Just as side note, in that diagram, the Gigabit Ethernet... when trying to install the graphics card, I had to remove it to enable fitting the graphics card more comfortably (for my hand more than anything). I forgot to put it back in at first, but everything still worked. Should I be worried?0 -
No, if the ethernet card was left out the PC will still work fine, you just won't have an ethernet connection until it's replaced.
It is possible that the graphics card is overstretching the PSU: 250W is very low even on an old PC. The card does not draw 400W itself, but in conjunction with the other components it may be placing too much demand on the PSU and therefore it will fail POST and prevent the system booting. That would explain why no beep (which indicates a successful POST)
Replacing an ATX PSU is a very simple job, they all fit the same (4 screws), it's simply a matter of unplugging everything and noting where it goes back with the replacement. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Ah, that's fine then. I was confused as to why it was still working when I hadn't replaced it. Thought the part must be faulty.
Well the startup posted 4 beeps, then 2 then 3 then 3 which apparently means extended block move which must be the bios settings. I don't want to change the bios settings and then find it doesn't work and I can't get the settings back.
I'll think about the PSU - we may still get a second PC but this one is working better since closed's thread and a basic cleanout inside.
The RAM is in now too, so up to 2GB - not sure when i'm supposed to notice the difference, but i'll look out for any changes.0 -
Since it's not going to work efffectively unless you get the graphics card up and running, I'd invest another £20 or so and change the PSU-you are still way under the cost of a new PC, and you've learned a lot in the meantime. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
