Ordered the Graphics Card and RAM.

Less than £40 combined, can't be bad!

AOL say they won't provide me with a router unless I sign up for another 18 months contract, so I said no thanks. I need to find an AOL compatible router on eBay now, so will look for that later.

try using IE instead of firefox or chrome to watch iplayer, it uses less ram, and reset the homepage to www.google.co.uk

did you do a full scan with malwarebytes? also do a scan with http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe

a router, wired or wireless just plugs into your network (ethernet) port (assuming that you have one?), and maintains the internet connection for you, once you have told it your aol password/details and a few other settings - guides should be available on the aol site.

correct cleanmem installer is called cleanmem_v2.3.2_setup.exe , if you downloaded any other filename, don't install it - (some people have trouble downloading the correct software)

if firefox (or chrome) is full of addons, and is set to do updates (tools, options, advanced) that may also have an impact on speed.

these browser externsions could be disabled - ie, tools, manage addons

Right i'll do all the above now - I did Malwarebytes yesterday (found nothing) will do again.

I've just done the Tv Catchup/Facebook/Silverbird adding/removing on Chrome, Firefox, IE and Opera - the commit charge was a little lower when removing TV Catchup on all 4 browsers - removing Silverbird and Facebook made little difference.

Not much commit charge difference in all browsers at all stages but Chrome was slightly better with Opera being the worst.

I think TV Catchup is the main culprit. I'm told TV Catchup and ITV Player slow things down but iPlayer is fine, so maybe it's just certain programs?

One things for sure, the rest of the PC has sped up after doing what closed as suggested!

Hopefully the memory/graphics card will work and a router. I just have to find one now so will go to eBay.

There is no such thing as 'AOL compatible'. Any ADSL modem/router will work on an an AOL service.
If you buy a router that AOL do not support, then they will not help you if you get problems-but that is hardly an issue given TT's level of tech suport.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    Ah right okay, thanks.

I'll go ahead and buy an ADSL.Router then and if I have trouble i'll ask people here. As you say, AOL's tech support is poor. Been there and they are hopeless. Nearly as bad as me....nearly!

Yes that will work fine. 54MBps is the maximum theoretical wireless speed. Your line will run at the speed of the weakest link in the chain, which is usually your linespeed-in your case 8MBps or less.

Thanks macman. I shall go ahead and purchase this one.

Can't wait for it all to arrive now, if only to give me a panic attack on how to get it all working :o

you could always haggle, say you're off to a cheaper deal with a free router and cashback thrown in if they don't send one, and reduce the price now.

I could but I didn't :o I'll happily buy this router for £14 - saved alot with all of your help anyway as I was going to fork out £300 for a new PC.

Just another £6.40 to go wireless :)

Another option open to you is just to run a clean install of XP Home SP3
