the test to pin down where/when/why it slows up
ie boot up, launch nothing but IE, check commit and cpu utilisation in task manager
then load tv catchup, note figures
then load facebook, note figures
reboot, repeat with chrome or firefox.!!

61 in the little circle on the task bar. I assume the higher the number the more memory is being used.
Will try all that out tomorrow. Quickly tested when she nipped to the kitchen. Tv catchup seems to.be the big culprit in this case as other things improved without it.
I often find when re-encoding videos that my browser is really slow too and HD videos are almost impossible to play.
I think more RAM and a new graphics card can only help. Cheaper than the £300 on the newer pc.0 -
graphics card (and free router) will probably give bigger benefits of the two.!!

In this case, the extra 1GB of RAM would help too, due to the possibility of video card RAM being duplicated in system RAM. At a mere £9.34, I think that it's worth it.0 -

I'll do all 3. It can't do no harm at all and it's cheaper than the new PC we thought we may have to get.0 -
W
RAM here
Just a question about RAM - is this definitely the RAM? The crucial tool couldn't be right and a different motherboard be installed? Sounds silly but I am not technical, so apologies.
Either way, i'd like to add a couple of 1GB sticks if possible as this would be worth it just incase we do more things on the PC. Do they have to be the same brand of memory stick?
Will sort our a router and buy that Graphics card you suggested http://www.ebuyer.com/255113-msi-hd-5450-1gb-64bit-ddr3-dvi-hdmi-vga-pci-e-low-profile-r5450-md1gd3h-lp again please reassure me that this will fit my machine.
Sorry for the doubts, I just want to make sure I get the right things0 -
Any RAM that you buy via the Crucial system scanner is guaranteed compatible-the brand doesn't matter.
3GB is overkill on XP really-2GB will be fine.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Crucial wrong, me right.
Just buy the RAM I suggested. It's cheap and as closed suggests 2GB will do the trick.
Your computer specs state; PCI Express x16 interface ( low profile). The card fits with that specification. Here.
My only caveat would be your rather weedy PSU, rated at 250 watts. But I run a similar card on a 250 watt PSU without mishap.
More information along with the latest Driver(use the one for XP, of course), to be found here. Use the Driver from this link, rather than the one supplied with the card.
You will need to download and save the file. Un-zip it to extract the files/folder within and then run the Setup file within(once you have installed the card).0 -

Ha, okay, you are right
Thanks for all of that - i'll go and buy the graphics card and RAM now and then do closed's tests as I had to go out unexpectedly.0
