The funeral went very well and I'm glad to say I was able to be a comfort to Mother and to say a final goodbye to Auntie V - the one person I know who looked like me :) (My son looks like my husband).

Coming back in the limousine, I had a wonderful picture in my head of a much younger Auntie V, in a beautiful pink dress, she had short dark hair, and was in a field full of daisies, and she was dancing, by herself, whirling round with a huge smile on her face. It was beautiful and very vivid still.

As I am a believing Christian and so was she, I believe this to be God's way of telling myself and Mother that Auntie V has come home and that she is now with God. It made me cry, it was so beautiful.

I told Mother about my picture, I hope it comforted her.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • Mother and the male relative and his wife are coming to see me on Wednesday and we are having lunch at the local carvery :) Will be nice .

So sorry to hear about your Aunty, glad you were able to spend time with her, glad everything is going on with your birth mum xxx
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx
  • I am going to ask Mother if she would like us to take her to church occasionally (My Auntie V was a keen churchgoer until she lost her mobility, and Mother told me that she too used to attend, but a different one to Auntie V).

The male relative is not a churchgoer and although he does lots for her (and did lots for Auntie V too),and I am really grateful to him, I think this is maybe the one thing we can do for her and perhaps the main thing she and I can share together. We took Auntie V to visit her church in the summer, it meant a lot to her and I'm so glad we did that.

I know Mother used to attend a Methodist church (what she called 'Chapel'- she didn't like the bells and smells in Auntie V's church), so I'll see if she still wants to go.

I'm off now to look up the nearest Methodist Church to where she lives :)

sdw, that's lovely, thank you for letting us know.Did she like your new home? Is it still close enough that you can still visit her?

Thanks. The bungalow is a mile closer to where she lives, so 32 miles away instead of 33 :)

Well, a long time since the last update and the main news is that Aunty V had made me a joint residual legatee (with my mother) of her substantial estate.:o

I was so shocked when I heard that I cried all evening, I felt guilty and that I didn't deserve it.

Since then I have come to terms with the fact that she wanted me to have it, that, to her, blood was indeed thicker than water (there are no other blood relatives), she referred to me as 'her own niece' and that although towards the end she was physically frail and very deaf, there was nothing wrong with her mind.

I am so grateful for the money, but even more for the thought, I hope I am always able to live up to being her 'own niece' and will always remember her with gratitude. I am now doubly glad I had that wonderful picture of her in my head, immediately after the funeral, I didn't know about the inheritance then.

I am on friendly terms with one of the executors, ( a nephew by marriage to another sister), he has absolutely no problem whatsoever with me having the money, one thing I was worried about.

I know it reads like an Agatha Christie plot, long-lost daughter/niece turns up and gets all the money. It's one of the reasons I felt so guilty about it.

I have a use for the money, it won't be just saved or wasted. it will pay off the mortgage on the bungalow we have just bought.

Thanks Auntie V, hope I live up to the person you thought I was.

I am sure she's very proud and knew you would use the money wisely :)
