Practically asked to give a job to another Managers family member

Any employers I've worked for (mostly public sector employers) have a very strict selection process and applicants are short listed by at 3 panel members and then interviewed by 3 different panel members to those that did the shortlisting.
It depends on the selection process of your particular company but I personally do not think it was fair to interview his family member in the first place especially when they had not applied for the job in the first instance.
I have always worked in private sector and recruitment processes are usually there for the benefit of the employer, not the employee. Basically, there are no laws or rules in recruitment in private companies, they can advertise positions or just promote from within or hire the CEO's cleaner if they please. A closing date is for convenience and for getting the new employee in place as swiftly as possible.
And anyway, a lot of public sector recruitment policies still allow for recruiting whoever the manager has had their eye on anyway, they just have to be seen to be following procedure which results in the same outcome only with time and money wasted in the process.0 -
What a refreshing thread to read Yvonne. I am wholeheartedly in agreement with how you have handled this.0

Good news yvonne! I'm glad that your company is a sensible one and not a twisted one who make things backfire!
Keep us all updated though eh? - It would be nice to hear of this person getting a disciplinary or something!0 -
I have been following this with great interest. It is so refreshing to hear from someone in a senior position, who doesn't allow unethical tactics such as this, to interfer with her professional judgement.
Well done Yvonne, I take my hat off to you. If only there were more people like you in your position.
Please keep us posted as to the outcome, thank you.0 -
Just bumping this to see if there's any updates.0

The manager and his side kick in HR has resigned and the other person in HR has been given a final written warning. It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0
