Practically asked to give a job to another Managers family member

I have been interviewing people over the past couple of days for a position in my I.T department.

I had over 200 responces and interviewed 10.
3 people stood out so I asked them back for 2nd Interview's and test.

Today one of the managers that works downstairs asked me if I could interview his family member as she had just lost her job. I agreed and I interviewed her this afternoon and she didn't meet the criteria I was looking for.

As I was leaving work he stopped me in the car park and asked how she had got on, I just said I will inform HR on Monday and they will confirm with her my decision.
Then he pipes up and says he hopes I give her the job because he told her he would sort it.
Now he has send an email on my private home email address implying that if I don't give her the job he could make things become difficult for me.

Now I'm not being funny but what makes him think just because he is asking me to give her the job I will? Also what makes him think I will not forward the email to his Manager and HR?

I believe in doing things fair and this is not and I refuse to be pressured into it.
It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun

I don't think he is asking it's more like telling and he can't do that.

I would tell HR and tell them you have an email from him and say you can forward it to them once you obviously have spoken to them about the manager. You should also request a meeting with his manager along with HR

I normally agree with you alot on here...however I think these questions are irrelevant.

OP If you gave the job to this person based on threats of a relative and she turns out to be crap you have no way of getting rid of her and thus causes even more problems down the road

Personally I think you need to put your foot down and go with your original decision, you gave her a better than most chance in interviewing her but she wasn't good enough.

If the guy gives you any grief then make sure you have everything accounted for and go to HR

Give the job to the best person (as per usual). Keep the e-mail and keep a record of any interactions between you including car park conversations etc. Then if he does 'make things difficult' for you in the future, you've got evidence for a grievance. Oh, and keep good records of why she didn't get the job and whoever else did.
Are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

He doesn't out rank me I am above him, he is level 2 and I am level 4

She has never done anything except work at a well known fast food place and has never been trained in any form of computer skills.
I though she may have done something and forgot to put it on her CV but I was wrong.
The Manager did tell me she worked for a well known computer company for the last 5 years hence my surprise when I saw her CV.

then it's clear she does not meet the criteria, full stop.

If you out rank him (and even if you didn't) they are not responsible for your recruitment, are they? Also if you took this person on you haven't been fair to yourself or the ones you first interviewed.
I would ask to see his boss and HR and show them the email

I take it you will be line managing this staff member?

Personally, I'd tell him that if I wanted someone who knew how to flip burgers I'd have posted the ad in MaccyDs - what I was after was an experienced professional in X and that's what I am going to a - get and b - pay for.

And as I outrank him by 2 levels, I am forwarding his email to his manager and to HR and letting them deal with this harassment just in case he is also using these techniques with other staff members within the company.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Hmmmm - makes you wonder how this other Manager got his job. As previous OP's have said - you gave her an interview & she didn't meet the criteria - end of. After all its your department you are interviewing for & if you'd gone ahead & employed her how would that make the rest of the team feel - esp as she doesn't have the correct skills so someone else would have to teach/carry her!
    I agree with Google
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle
