I really hope this 'bully' is suitably punished, it makes me sick that this thing goes on and in many cases goes ahead.

Good on you for doing the right thing x

I don't mind if people's familys work together ect but what does bother me is the "because they are related to me they should be given the job over anyone else" attitude.

I was also informed today that the incorrect closing date was advertised as 23.03.12 and not 16.03.12 so that means she applied in time.

I requested a closing date of 16.03.12 and have the paperwork to prove this so it looks like someone amended it.

But you said in your initial post "Today one of the managers that works downstairs asked me if I could interview his family member as she had just lost her job. I agreed and I interviewed her this afternoon and she didn't meet the criteria I was looking for."

Therefore, if your initial closing date was 16th March why interview someone else today at another Managers request when the closing date had passed?

I'm not starting a debate here, I'm just trying to understand your posts as the written word is not always easy to comprehend.

Because he showed me a copy of the job spec with 23.03.12 as the closing date.

yvonne firstly thanks for you PM - mighty useful so I thought I'd chime in and offer some advice in return.

I suspect someone somewhere in your company is playing golf (or similar) with someone somewhere else in your company. For dates to be changed like that is no accident. Be very careful of this other manager, they may be two levels below you but they've clearly got half the company stitched up somehow. Tread really carefully as I've seen workplace politics, families and their bullying before (I have first hand experience of being their victim when standing up to them). Life can be made a real misery and I narrowly dodged the sack several times (for doing nothing wrong but being the black sheep who's name kept being dragged up to management in a bad light). If you have any close friends in the company also in management you need to discuss it with them 'out of work' and find out what the score is with this other manager and his setup before acting too hastily. Call in favours that people owe you, get them to dig etc. Someone somewhere in your company knows what is going on, you just need to get hold of that info and decide what risk this person poses to you. If it starts to look like a can of worms waiting to explode then drop the fight and look after your job even if you do have to bite your tongue. You can always get shot of the duff employee in the future somehow but in truth I suspect they're only after a foot in the door of the company before being transferred out to another department. Whatever is going on there is politics at work that you don't know about so make that your top priority as clearly you're not in contact with the key parts of the grapevine that you need to be.

Definitely a weird one though.. wanting a skilled job with zero experience / knowledge / use to the company. Really weird..

To be honest I couldn't give a rat's behind about the other manager nor workplace politics.

I don't play games therefore I will not be speaking to close friends nor co workers in the company about anything as I am able to look after myself, plus people have a habit of repeating what is said in private.

I also will not be calling in favours as there is no need as this is a simple case of a manager using his position to get an unfair advantage.

If a can of worms gets opened so be it, no one I repeat no one intimidate's me.

Like I said Monday is coming so we will see.

If you and hum share a superior, I would have a quiet word and mention your concerns and unsuitabilty, just incase it comes to bit you on the future, or he starts acting up.

Fair enough,. I'll give you credit where its due you've got balls!!!

I wish I had a manager like you in my last couple of jobs - maybe I'd of had half a chance of being happy at work!

Good luck, keep us all updated!

    Something definitely amiss here.

Tricky Wicky is probably right about the golf course.

But I think you are right not to be looking at this as a matter of calling in favours and playing the golf course yourself.

Yes there are risks. But if you go to the top of HR - the right place for this, you cannot be criticised. If this person is not in on it, then it should be sorted. If they are in on it, I doubt this sort of game will be played with any post for which you recruit thereafter.

And if there is blowback, it is better just to leave and let the organisation succumb to the inevitable inbreeding which follows form these practices.
